~Killua's POV~
It was illegal to wear anything heavier than a T-shirt and shorts in this weather.
That's what I deemed, anyway.
No one is allowed outdoors unless there is an emergency, and this has been going on for at least a week. We haven't been informed why, and I've looked through every window I could find from every angle, but everything appears to be normal. All windows are locked shut at all times, meaning I couldn't hear any commotion either.
The scavenger crew reported sightings of melting walkers on the pavement not too far from here. Fortunately, we have fans. And I've had one in front of me every second of the day, despite wearing tank tops and some of Gon's short shorts. And, as much as I dislike being kept in one place, I'm glad it's not me out there.
"What are you doing?"
I sat upside-down on the armchair in our room, a fan on full blast directly in front of my face, blowing my hair all over the place. "I don't know, what are you not doing?" Gon grinned as he sat on the bed next to the chair. "It's getting pretty hot, but isn't that better than being cold?"
"When it's cold, I want it to be hot, and when it's hot, I want it to be cold. I'm not sure what I think anymore." My head felt funny, probably because I'd been sitting upside down for the entire duration. Instead, I flipped my body and slouched on the chair.
"There was a forest fire not too far away, I'm not sure if it's gone out yet." He blurts, peeking out the window and sighing. "We've got no one to put it out, so it's just going to keep burning." Gon sat on our bed, poking his palm.
"Is that why we can't go outside?"
"That's a part of it, I'm pretty sure. I want to see for myself though." He responded, now standing. "Wait you mean right now? I'll come with you." I got up from my comfy chair, letting him lead the way out. "I'm glad. We'll have to leave quietly so no one can rat us out."
From there, we walked silently down the stairs and through the halls, smiling at anyone passing by to make it appear less likely that we were about to break their current new rule. I sighed in annoyance as a woman in a large white coat pulled Gon aside and began talking to him. Gon looked at me, then to the door, motioning for me to approach it.
The woman had her back to me, and Gon was doing his best to distract her while I placed my hand on the doorknob, barely twisting it before it came to a halt. The door was locked. The woman turned around as if she sensed something was wrong, clearly catching the handle in my hand. With my quick thinking, I put on my best acting face.
I collapsed to the ground, wincing as I held my leg up to my chest. "I apologize, ma'am; I tripped and sprained my ankle. On my way down, I grabbed the doorknob for support." As I whimpered in pain, my voice broke. Gon rushed over to me, hopefully catching on. "Oh, killua, are you alright? I'll take you back to our room so you can rest your leg." He wrapped my arm around his shoulders and supported me as I limped. "What were you doing by the door, anyway? You're aware that you can't be out there right now. It's for your protection-"
"Yeah, of course, I know that! I was just- watering the plants."
"But there aren't any plants by the entrance-"
I skipped away with Gon, turning a corner and then cutting the act. "The door is locked. Do you want to go outside that bad?" I asked, leaning against the wall. "I know where the key is." And just like that, I knew there was no way we would get out of this without finding out what Gon wanted to know.
"And how do you expect us to get it?" I asked as if he wasn't determined either way. "Well, ging is still trying to apologize... I'll just ask him for the key," Gon smirked, knowing he couldn't say no. "You have a plan for everything, don't you?" I grinned, walking down the hall beside him.
"I wish."
---
"Yes, you can have the key. But you might want to-"
"Thanks, Ging! we will be back soon." Gon swiped the keys from Ging's hand, grabbing mine, and leading us away. "Wow, he'll let you get away with anything," I said after we were far enough away. Gon smiled sadly. "It's because he isn't used to having a son anymore." I frowned, not knowing how to reply. I squeezed his hand instead.
When we got to the front door, we pulled out the keys and unlocked it. He twisted the knob, slightly opening the door, and I almost puked right then and there. I plugged my nose and covered my mouth with my shirt, Gon doing the same. The smell of walker remains and smoke hit us like a ton of bricks. He quickly shut the door and relocked it. We dashed away from the door, releasing our mouths and noses, and taking several deep breaths.
"Guess we finally found something that smells worse than Leorio's B.O."

~Kurapika's POV~ --Current time--
The stench was unbearable, and our masks were only blocking half of it. Alluka only complained for a few days before getting used to it. The heat was also unbearable, but because we were travelling, we had to wear thicker clothing to protect ourselves from walkers and such.
I've been seeing the world differently since the day I met Alluka. Because all she ever says is facts and other smart people stuff. Of course, I understood many of them, but she managed to surprise me with a few. So far, the potential walker cure has piqued my interest the most.
The thing is, we've been finding these flowers all over the place. This entire time, an antidote was right under our noses. That makes me wonder if we had seen those same flowers while we were in a group before.
I was sitting under a tree in a field not far from where Alluka was playing with her cat, Nanika. I read a book that we found while searching different houses and stores. We were constantly on the move and only took what we needed, but I decided to sneak myself the book as a little treat.
My wounds were healing, but it felt like it had been an eternity since I hadn't walked in pain. The bandages remained in place, and scars began to form. That's better than losing my life, I suppose.
Alluka smiled as she approached me with Nanika in her arms. "We'd better get going soon since it's getting dark." She says, looking up at the sky. The bandanas we made out of shirts to use as filters muffled her words. I look up and see the sun is setting and the golden hour was passing.
"Where will we be heading off to tonight?" I asked since we had been outside all day, not having any place in mind.
"Don't worry, I saw some houses down the road. We must leave immediately if we're going to make it alive." She says, holding the cat closer to her. I sighed as I closed my book and tucked it into my bag. "All right, let's get going then."
