As the world fell down around him, all he could do was stare.
He felt powerless. After a worldwide broadcast revealed that multiple, very large nukes had been in production, everybody panicked. The amount of damage one of the weapons would do, if set off, would be enough to wipe out at least a quarter of humanity. There were five of them.
So, yes, when Kokichi got news that a timer had been set off on one by accident, he had a panic attack.Growing up in a christian household kept him on edge, always seeing the clues that signaled the end of the world, something he picked up on from hours worth of bible studies.
The amount of times he would lie awake at night, unable to breath as he sobbed over the suffering that was to come…
There were too many instances to count. The nuke being set off, in his terrified mind, reminded him of the times his mother would tell him that the end of the world was bound to come soon.
It reminded him of the times he believed her.Kokichi Ouma wasn't one to sit and cry. If anything, he preferred to fight back and stand tall, making horrific jokes in the most inappropriate times.
This situation was a bit different.
Thankfully, he wasn't alone in the world.
A loud knock sounded throughout his apartment, frantic and without rhythm. The noise had the purple haired boy out of his thoughts in an instant, allowing him to wipe his tears and hurry to open the door.
Standing there, in all his emo-boy glory, was Shuichi Saihara.
The detective wore the same mortified look as Kokichi himself, staring the other dead in the eyes and his lip trembled.
"Shuichi.."
"I couldn't be alone.." The boy muttered, standing taller than Kokichi himself as he looked down at him, face twisted into a very fearful expression," Can I come in? ..Please?"
Nothing else was needed. The door was pulled open, and Shuichi stepped inside, taking only a moment to scan over the mess of Kokichi's apartment. The latter climbed over things that were skewed across the floor, sitting himself on the couch and pulling his knees up to his chest.
"Why did you come to me?" He asked, turning his head to look at Shuichi, who made his own way over to the couch, sitting beside Kokichi.
"My Uncle is on a trip for a big case. Won't be back before the timer goes off, and he doesn't have a phone," The boy spoke, voice wavering," I was going to go see Kaede and her family.. Then I realized that you would be alone."
Kokichi's eyes widened for a moment, his head falling to stare at the floor. Shuichi had chosen him over his girlfriend. Why?
"Why?" He impulsively asked, noticing the confused look on the other's face," Why would you come see me? Sure, I'd be alone.. but Kaede.. she's your girlfriend."
There was a moment of silence between the two, awkward and suffocating. Thankfully the detective decided to respond," You told me about your family's past. How strong they were in their religion, and how you still struggle… because you believe in all of it, even after you escaped the hold of your parents. Even though you're no longer forced to believe."
Kokichi should've wondered about when, exactly, he had told Shuichi about his family and their Christianity, but he knew it was probably while he was half out of his mind from exhaustion, fear cutting off his ability to sleep.
Instead of asking about it, because he knew the answer, he brought up an entirely different question."Will you pray with me?"
It was a weird request, but he found that, in these situations, praying made things feel better.
Some say it's a false sense of hope."Of course I will," The other smiled down at him, comforting and willing to do whatever it takes to help.
As they grasped each other's hands and Kokichi began to spew out a prayer, a clock wired to a nuke ticked down from thirty.
As ten rolled around, the speech and begs came to a stop. Two pairs of eyes opened, but their hands still stayed entwined.
They would make it through.
(Five)Maybe not physically,
(Four)But spiritually.
(Three)Because as the world fell down around them,
(Two)They were together,
(One)And together, they were invincible.
