I made my way down the stairs and into the living room. I sat down on the couch next to Anne as she looked up from one of Atticus' comic books."Nice to see you Emily." She said, smiling at me.
I nodded.
"Nice to see you Anne. What're you reading?"
She flashed the cover to me.
"One of the kids' books. It reminds me of home sometimes."
I pulled one of the novels that Axel had gotten me from town the week before from the table by the couch. I pulled my feet under me so I was sitting comfortably as I read it.
The baby kicked inside of me and it hurt a bit. I leaned over as it beat against my ribs.
Anne let out a chuckle beside me."That happens. It hurts like hell but one day you'll miss it."
"Probably," I said. "I'm scared though."
"Why?"
I hadn't put much thought into my labor. I had never wanted kids but I always thought that if in the wake up an unfortunate pregnancy I would have them in the hospital.
With nurses and doctors.
And medical supplies.
"I've never given birth on a farm."
Anne laughed out loud, slapping her knee.
"You're funny Emily. Me either. I'm sure you'll do just fine and I'll be here to help."
I bit my lip and grinned.
"Thank you for helping me."
Anne put the book down and put her hand over mine. I closed my book and sat it back on the table as she turned to face me.
"Of course. We have to stick together to get out of here."
"But-"
I started to correct her again but she pushed her finger against my lips silencing me.
"Don't say anything." She said.
Anne leaned into me, her hair falling into her face as her eyes closed. Her hand was still over mine as she placed his lips against my lips. She kissed me long and deep, her tongue exploring my mouth.
I kissed her back.
Her arm reached around me, pulling me into her and I let her.
Our heads moved as did our mouths as we sat with one another.
What was I doing?
I pulled back hard losing my balance. The pain shot up my back as I hit the floor.
"Oh my god." Anne said.
She knelt down over me, her legs straddling my hips as she put her hands over my belly.
"Are you okay Emily?"
I shook my head and raised myself up on my elbow. Anne's face was concerned as she slid a finger down my cheek.
"I'm fine." I answered.
Anne giggled as she put her hand behind my head and kissed me again. This time she used her free hand to rub my thigh as she moved against me.
I wanted to pull away but I felt my body drawn to her.
Her hand slid down my thigh and under my dress.
I moaned as she moved over my underwear, sliding one of her fingers inside of me. Her lips still danced with mine as we kissed.
~
Anne rolled off of me, sliding her hand back up over my belly. The baby kicked at her warmness and she laughed.
"This is our secret." She told me as she stood up, reclaiming her spot on the couch and picking up the comic book.
I forced myself up, my back hurting but my body still tingling.
"Yeah, our secret." I reiterated.
I sat next to her picking up my novel and holding it open over my face.
I had never really been into women but I had had a few stop by me on the streets and paid me to make out with them and whatnot.
Anne was a whole new experience.
I was into her.
I thought of Axel being pissed that we were messing around, pissed that his body was into me instead.
I thought of Axel on top of her and Anne begging him not to ever so quietly so she didn't wake me.
Maybe we could be a throuple.
~
The door swung open and the kids raced inside. Atticus ran to me to show me a small stack of new comic books he got.
Anne and I hadn't moved. Both of us interesting in the words on the pages of our stories while the kids were gone.
She put hers down and stood as Cora ran into her open arms. She flashed the little sucker Axel had bought for her and started telling Anne about the playground.
Ivy ran to me, wrapping her arms around me as she jumped in my lap. I let out a little bit of air as she did so. Axel came through the door last with a large bag of groceries and another couple small bags.
I kissed Ivy's head before sitting her on the couch and making my way toward Axel. I took the large bag of groceries out of his arms and he kissed my cheek.
"Did you have fun?" I asked.
"Yeah, the kids played and I talked with another farmer that lives a few miles away. His chickens keep getting killed coyotes. Was the house nice today?"
I bit my cheek hard, copper filling my mouth as I focused on putting the groceries away.
Why did I feel guilty?
"Yes thank you. It was quiet and relaxing."
He came behind me, his arms wrapping around my middle as he kissed my neck.
"I got you something."
I turned as he held the bags out to me.
"I'll put the groceries away, you open those and sit down." He ordered.
I did as he said, taking my seat back at the table and slowly opening the bags.
I cried out in joy at the little clothes.
White onesies and sleepers. White little socks and yellow outfits with matching bibs and hats.
"Oh my Axel," I yelled, jumping up and hugging his back. "Thank you babe."
I had never called him that but it felt right. It slipped off my tongue easily. He turned around and kissed me before nodding.
"No thank you," He said. "For having my baby and being such a lovely mother."
I ran back to the bags, ripping them open as little toys and packs of clothes and wipes fell out. I picked up the fabric and realized they were washable diapers in several sizes.
"I love you." Axel said into my hair as he stood behind me again. I turned on my heel, staring up at him as I threw my arms around his neck.
"I love you too."
