As a Demon King, Shinyo was anything but unfamiliar with opponents of all races and kinds challenging him. He fought gods, and fellow demons and even survived millions of demon hunters coming after his blood. Demons desired his throne, humans wanted his blood to forge more weapons for themselves, and gods saw his power as a nuisance.
Only a handful of creatures in the universe can stand up to them, and Shinyo Takami, the current demon king, was one of those they called varmints. That's how powerful he was.
He watched humans build great civilizations and saw their fall under the passage of time. He killed, and he bled but lived on. He thought he had seen everything and fought too many creatures to be surprised anymore.
But, even a great demon overlord is wrong sometimes.
It happened when Shinyo was patrolling a border of his territory after it was reported about signs of a human entering it. It was not an uncommon situation, challengers are a biweekly thing a minimum for him.
This one though. This one was a bit different than the usual cases.
"Demon, I challenge you!" a cranky, loud voice declared. Shinyo blinked, and let his gaze drop down. A child, slightly older looking than his own five-year-old son, was glaring up at him. "Prepare to meet your end, you filthy monster!" the child roared, and jumped forward, swinging a sword almost as big as himself.
Shinyo sidestepped and wordlessly stared when the child barely stopped himself from toppling over.
Blue eyes met his own, and the demon king could feel his lips twitch upwards. "Fight properly you coward!" This time, instead of swinging the sword that was obviously too heavy for him, the boy put his palm outwards, and let a small red flame cover his hand.
He shot two fireballs out, small but fierce, and took an attacking stance again.
Shinyo stepped behind to avoid a fireball and flicked the other away with a snap of his wings. He fully grinned "Wow, as expected of a Todoroki, your fire is hot even to demons, baby spark." Touya froze.
Shinyo noticed a nearby patch of grass was on fire because of the first fireball and stepped on it, extinguishing the flames. Since this was a border between a human and demon territory, the wildlife here was still easily flammable and he didn't need a wildfire to start and then be blamed by humans for it.
"It would probably be effective against lower-ranked demons, I'm not one of them though. Heed my advice and leave this place, you are not ready to be my challenger yet."
"Who are you, how do you know who I am?" the child demanded, eyes burning in a familiar shade of blue. Shinyo snorted "Like I wouldn't recognize a fire-blooded, even if they don't even reach my knees yet."
"You're Endeavour's kid, yeah? Go back, and say hi to your father for me."
* * *
"HEAR NOW FOUL FEIND! I CHALLENGE YOU TO A BATTLE TO THE DEATH!"
Shinyo didn't even bother opening his eyes to look at his most recent challenger "...Nah."
"Wh-... But you're a Demon! You have to fight me!" Touya fumed, with puffed-up cheeks and an adorable little frown.
"Don't wanna." the man drawled, still leisurely resting on a tree, a safe distance from the small demon hunter.
"Why the fudge not?!"
"...fudge???... whatever..."
"It's just too fucking sunny and gross today, ok? Can't you just go and be noisy somewhere else? I'm sure some lower-class demon will be willing to keep you occupied for a while." since the kid is technically a challenger of the King, no demon would be allowed to fight him without Shinyo's permission, but the little matchstick didn't need to know that.
