Foster home

My earliest  memory as a child was holding my mothers hair back as she threw up into the bushes outside our apartment.

She had just gotten back from a club that she left me home alone for.

Shortly after that incident, possibly only a few months to a year, she thought she wasn't a good enough mother, so, she sent me to one of those foster homes until she had a stable job and a better place.

"Jonas, someone here wants to talk to you, honey." One of the workers said. "This is Lila and Cathrin. These two want to know if you think they could keep you until your mommy comes back?"

Back then I didn't understand how two women could be married but I caught on quickly.

"My name is Lila and this is my wife, Cathrin. We have another son back home who's sixteen, do you want to come home with us and meet him?" One woman said.

I was stressed by the whole situation of having new people take care of me and froze up.

As a seven year old autistic child many things can be difficult for me, including talking. So I learned sign language to help me when I go non-verbal.

Cathrin sat down on the ground and started signing. It felt like I belonged there when she did.

She told be about how she and her son were also autistic and specifically wanted ask me to become their foster child because I was too and she knew how to deal with situations involving autism.

The amount of joy I was experiencing at that moment was so much that I will never forget it.

When they took me home and showed me to my room I immediately had so many ideas on how to decorate it.

"Do I call you both mama now?" I asked, "Only if you want to. You can call us both anything you want." Cathrin responded in a soothing voice.

"Would you like to make a list of things you want in your room?"

I hugged her leg and told her she makes a good mama.

Fifteen years pass by and I turn twenty-two. They officially adopted me at sixteen with a written letter from my mother saying they could, due to a few complications in her own life.

One day faithful day I come home to see mail with my name on it sitting on the table.

"Ma? Do you know who this is from?" "No, I don't. I checked the return address but we don't know anyone from where it was sent from."

I hesitated to open it, it was like there was something shadowing over me with a type aura of regret.

As I tore open the small paper envelope and read what was inside, tears rolled down by face as I realized who it was from.
