"the search party for Yena Acoff, daughter of Mr. Yoonsuk Acoff, has commenced as of today. any updates or sightings of her shall be reported immediately to the authorities. Mayor Seth and the Parliament thank your cooperation." the speakers all around the land blared, causing all my peers to pause their training.
"good timing. that's your break," one of our commanders instructed and so we all dispersed into our little cliques. some heading straight to the cafeteria while others headed to the dorms.
i took a seat at one of the benches, wiping the surface of my sword as i looked at its shiny silver reflection underneath the scorching sun.
"acoff's missing huh.." hyunsuk approached as he shoved his sword back into his stash. i took a deep sigh and nodded.
his dark black hair shining against the sunlight as he ran his hands through it, squinting at the sun with that hooligan smile i had grown up with. hyunsuk had always been my best bud amongst the soldiers; i could rely on him, though he has a bit of a 'fuck it! yolo!' attitude.

"if only i was there with her in her new cottage-"
fury burned within me as i beat myself up for not being able to make it during the first few days of yena living alone. maybe if i had been there, then she wouldn't be gone right now. if only i had visited. but that day, the soon-to-be Chiefs and assistants had a training and Chief Kim wouldn't let us skip without a valid reason.
"dude that's enough. you couldn't have possibly known!" hyunsuk nudged me by the elbow as he sighed.
"how'd your da- Mayor Seth, react?" his voice got softer as his eyes darted around cautiously.
i never really told anyone that the mayor was my dad.. mostly because he hadn't been the best parent figure ever. all he did was push me into soldier trainings to make myself 'useful' for the parliament.. but - and i hate to admit this - he is a great mayor for the nation. the best one the nation's ever seen in fact.
but he's my father first before a mayor, so he could've at least spent some consideration for his growing son back in the day.
only hyunsuk knows about my dad, and it shall stay that way.
"keep your voice down, suk." i rolled my eyes.
the past few days have been torture for me ever since mr acoff told me about yena. where could she even have ran off to? yena was never the type to be reckless... mostly because she knew her condition. and she knew it well— she knew her heart better than anyone here. i could barely even sleep the first night i heard about her missing. my theories keep leading me to believe that she got kidnapped.. or maybe it had something to do with those random ogre sightings a while back.
