Chapter 4
Ethan
I've never been so scared in my life. When I saw Brynn laying in the freezer, not moving, unconscious and bleeding, I thought she was dead. I thought I would never get the chance to make up for all the pain I caused her. Now she doesn't even remember what I did.
I don't know if that's a blessing or a curse.
In a way, I've been given a second chance to do it right this time. But if I don't tell her what she's blocked out, I could lose her and never get her back. I have to do the right thing but still....
"You need a break, Ethan. You've been here around the clock for three days. You've barely eaten, you haven't slept and you smell... bad." Beckett is right. I do smell. But leaving her means I take a chance of someone telling her the truth before I can.
"Ethan! Are you listening to Beckett?" Leo pushes my shoulder to get my attention.
"What? Yeah! I'm listening! I just don't think..." Glancing over my shoulder at Brynn, asleep in the bed, I wonder just how safe she really is.
"She's not alone here. Lindsey would be a fool to come here after everything she's done. Look, just come home with me, get a shower and something to eat. I'll bring you right back." Beckett offers, knowing how worried I am about this entire mess.
He's right though. There isn't a person in this hospital who doesn't know Lindsey or what she's done. I don't see how she could get away with anything here. But I don't put anything past her. She would kill her own mother if it suited her. Unfortunately, her mom died a long time ago.
Going back to my chair, I lean over and kiss Brynn on the forehead. Her eyes flutter open, an immediate look of confusion on her face.
"Hey, sugarbear. I'm going to go clean up a bit and bring you back some of Georgia's famous Honey whiskey brisket. Cole is going to be right here with you." I explain, hoping she'll be okay with it.
"Oh, okay." Looking at Beckett and Leo behind me, it's clear she doesn't remember who's who yet.
"That's Beckett and my brother Leo, remember?" Pointing to each of them, I try to find patience that I don't have. "Cole's out in the hall on a call. He'll be in shortly."
"But you're coming back, right?" Brynn questions me as she reaches for my hand. As if she could stop me from coming back to her.
I was right next to her when she woke up. I stayed right here for days making sure she was safe and recovering. She's opened a door to me that has been bolted tight for years. And I have to tell her why she turned me away years ago. But not yet.
"I'm coming back, I promise. Nothing will keep me away from you again." Not now, not ever.
"What do you mean again? Ethan..." She's as inquisitive as she always was.
Giving her one more kiss on the forehead, I look at Beckett, wondering if I should just beg for a shower here. "You could just bring me a change of clothes and some takeout."
"You still smell. You need a break. She's in good hands. Brynn, I'll bring him back in much better shape than he's in now. I promise, you'll thank me later." Beckett grabs my arm and drags me to the door.
It took a lot of pushing and negotiating but Beck convinced me to go. Cole stayed behind and was on his phone with the electrician when we left. That was some comfort at least, knowing she will have someone to protect her.
We went straight to Georgia's house and I hurried up the stairs avoiding all the questions that I knew were coming. I don't have any answers but more questions. I'm hoping Georgia's investigator is able to dig up some information on Lindsey.
