Chapter 19

Aubrey

I feel like I have been in a car wreck. Oh yeah, I was. Everything hurts. Everything aches. I can barely move, or breathe, or... Oh no! Car wreck, I was in labor and we were going to the hospital! The baby!

No! No! No! Not again! This can't happen again.

Pushing up, frantic to find my child, my eyes open, wild and crazed with panic. Where's my baby?! What happened? Where's Beckett?

"Help! Someone! My baby!" Screaming at the top of my lungs, my throat hurts and I'm so weak.

"Hey! Hey! Aubrey, just relax, baby." Beckett is immediately at my side. Nudging me gently back into the bed. "You're okay now. Aubrey, look at me. Everything is okay. You're safe."

"Our baby?" My hands touch my belly but I know there's no child in there. I can't feel it. I feel empty. Beckett where's the..."

He shifts his weight and I see my mom behind him, sitting across the room in a rocking chair holding our baby. The relief floods me as I lay back and let the tears flow.

"Hey, none of that now. You were hurt, baby. Unconscious and unresponsive." Beckett sat on the edge of the bed, holding my hand in one of his and smoothing my hair from my face with the other.

"Is the baby okay?" I'm not concerned about me. As long as our baby is healthy and safe that's what's important.

"The baby is fine now. They want to keep both of you for a few days just to be safe. The baby was in distress, the doctors did what they had to to save both of you. They had to do a C-section." Beckett explained as Mom walked over to me.

"There's my strong girl. You needed to rest, to heal. You're going to be sore for a while and it's going to take you longer to recover but everything is just fine." Mom assured me as Beckett helped me sit up, careful to not pull my stitches across my lower belly.

"I think it's time to introduce you to the new man in our lives. He's got Beckett's temper and your nose." Mom teased us as she laid my boy in my arms.

"I already counted his fingers and toes. Everything is where it's supposed to be." Beckett smiled as I moved the blanket to check for myself.

He's so tiny and quiet. His little fingers are curled into fists next to his ears. His eyes are closed content and dreaming of nursing as his lips pucker up to suck. The soft blue beanie on his head doesn't hide the dark red hair that sticks out from beneath it.

Nuzzling his neck, he smells of lavender and powder. A memory from my own childhood comes to mind when the scent hits me. I'm guessing Mom has been the one who changed him and bathed him.

"Paige has been a big help. She's been teaching me a lot. This is my first baby, you know." Beckett smiles as Mom steps back and rubs his back.

"You helped Quinn with Hope." I remind him.

"I didn't change her diaper and I had plenty of help if she cried. Between Ma and Quinn and all the other women in the family, I didn't have to learn much. This is different." Yes, it is. This is our baby. Our first baby.

"I'm going to go find Will. I'll be back, honey. I'm going to love being a grandma!" Mom kissed my head, the baby's, then turned to Beckett and squeezed his hand before she left us alone.

When the door closed, I saw the shadows on Beckett's face. The tiredness in his eyes. "What don't I know? Something happened, more than the car accident. What is it?"
