why didn't you stop me?

back to the present, it had been a year since that situation that happened between the two of them.

they were on pretty good terms now, they dont speak as much as they used too, but it was better than blatantly ignoring eachother.

mizuki started to develop feelings for rui, as they were alone on the rooftop of kamiyama highschool, mizuki was silently cursing themselves for rejecting him back in middle school. in mizuki's defense, they were young and didnt know how to deal with feelings back then, let alone confessions.

as they were lost in their own thoughts. a familiar but comforting voice could be heard even through their headphones

"mizuki! i wasnt expecting you up here!" the boy exclaimed, he hasnt seen mizuki for a while. he was excited that they could hang out and start again, as friends.

mizuki took off their headphones and stopped dozing off, pretending the thoughts they had just a moment ago were non-existent.

"rui? hey, its been awhile! you seem like youre in a good mood." they spoke so casually, almost as if the past was completely erased.

"oh mizuki.. still reading me like an open book after all this time! what were you listening to?" he asked, tone filled with curiousity.

"i was listening to 'why didnt you stop me' by mitski! her music is really relatable to me, and it gives me comfort." mizuki exclaimed passionately, little did rui know that mizuki was thinking of him while they listened to it.

"ah, its nice that you find comfort in her then! well, is anything happening in your life currently? your hair grew quite alot since i last saw you."

mizuki took that as a compliment and lightly blushed, it was almost invisible unless you were face to face with them.

"well, im getting better. i found new friends now, and life isnt as bad anymore! how about you, found someone to replace me?" they said jokingly, although they secretly hoped rui hasn't got over them.

"maybe..! well, im in a group called wonderlands x showtime now, like how you are with nightcord. theyre all very dear to me, and i wouldn't trade them for the world." his eyes were sparkling as he talked about his beloved group.

mizuki wonders, if they hadnt rejected him back in middle school. could he then talk about mizuki so lovingly?

"hey, do you mind if i tell you a secret?" rui's voice was enough to get their attention, he was the only one who could break their habit of dozing off.

"i dont mind at all! i remember when we would share our deepest thoughts with eachother in the past." mizuki was curious. what type of secret would it be?

"i have a crush on one of our group members, nene kusanagi. youre the only one i can talk about it! if i said it to any of our members, theres a chance id ruin the friendship!"

oh.

it seems like he had gotten over them.

he deserved someone better than them, they knew that. but why was there this burning feeling in their chest?

mizuki wasnt able to say anything, so they just made an attempt to smile.

if they were to make a wish, it was to go back in time and make the right decision.

in the end, it was their fault anyway. it was their fault for being stupid and rejecting him.
