I'd lost count of the amount of bats I'd killed. The giant fire web looked painfully close to being done, but the machines kept up their whirring, and I knew I had to hold on for a little longer.

I didn't know where Miguel was, I hadn't seen him in a while. After last time, I wasn't exactly inclined to go look for him.

Bats swarmed all around me and I kept slicing though them, but these nasty gremlins were learning. They understood I used their terrible eyesight to my advantage, so they focused on their super hearing.

Now they could find me, no matter how quiet I was being.

A few minutes later, all the machines simultaneously made a beeping noise, making the bats go crazy. They swarmed all around them, and I was worried about keeping them safe until I saw the message they displayed: "Web Complete".

Finally!

We could get out of here now.

I frantically looked for Miguel. He could probably use his webs now, since the heat coming from the pit cover was pretty intense.

I was suddenly grabbed from the back. Somehow, I was expecting it. For the third time today, I felt Miguel's entire body against mine, and I shuddered.

This man really had no concept of personal space. And it frustrated me to no end that I loved it.

He got us out of the mess of bats in an instant, and were swinging through the buildings in no time. I heaved a sigh of relief, all this madness was finally over and I could go home.

Remind me to never go on a solo mission with Miguel again.

Friends or not, he'd reminded me exactly why I'd kept myself away from him all these years. No matter how much I loved him, how much I shared his pain, he would never let me in.

In fact, he'd rather sacrifice himself and call me a brat while doing it.

'I know you're pissed off at me,' he said. 'And I-'

'Not now, Miguel,' I snapped. 'We can talk about it once we get back. I just want to get out of here.'

He remained silent and kept swinging until we landed on the building we were on earlier. There was still an imprint from when he slammed me into the wall, and from when I'd punched him.

Somehow, it seemed like ages ago. When I still thought fondly of him.

Before he reminded me just how damaged he was.

'Let's leave,' he sighed. He tapped his watch to open a portal.

Nothing happened.

His brow furrowed, and he tapped it again.

Still, nothing.

'Let me try,' I said, stepping forward. I did the same thing, hitting the button to open a portal to Spider-HQ.

It just didn't work.

'Uh-oh,' I whispered. 'Something's wrong with our watches.'

Miguel cursed under his breath. 'We have to get out of here. They'll know exactly where we are soon.'

'I'm out of webs,' I said, frustrated. 'At this rate, you'll be out too.'

He just grabbed me and hopped off the building. We traveled further into the outskirts of the city, a couple more miles away from the pit.

He set us down in the balcony of a penthouse and slid open the door. 'After you.'

I walked in and collapsed on the couch, exhausted. This day couldn't get any worse. Without our watches, who knows how long we'll be stuck here? Unless someone figures out where we went to and that we're in trouble, rescue could take days, if not weeks.

Weeks of being stranded without webs in a city full of carnivorous bats.

Not to mention the asshole who just slumped on the couch opposite me.

I love my life.

I took a second to look at him. He was bruised and beaten, his suit ripped in multiple places from attacks. I was sure I looked the same, but I gathered some more energy and went looking for supplies in the rooms.

I gathered some blankets, pillows and even discovered a full pantry.

Man, being rich must be nice.

Even though this city had been abandoned a while ago, the plethora of canned food in there would last us a while. I headed back to Miguel, wanting to tell him about what I'd found, only to find him fast asleep.

He must've been really exhausted. This was probably the first time I'd seen him sleep so carelessly; he always had something to take care of- another anomaly, or another canon event, or organizing spider HQ.

He rarely ever let himself rest.

'Spider-man 2099,' I whispered, covering him with a blanket. 'The great Miguel O'Hara sleeps for the first time in years.'

I sat down next to him, looking at his face. Without those red eyes glaring at you, he was quite handsome to look at. Stress had aged his features, but he still retained his charm.

I wish I'd known him before he took on the mantle of being leader of Spider-HQ, before he took it upon himself to relegate every anomaly in the multiverse.

I didn't know how long I just sat there, looking at him, but I must've fallen asleep at some point.

When I jerked awake, he was pressed up against me completely, and I was lying down. In his arms.

We were cuddling.

Oh, this is gonna be one awkward conversation.
