Today was the day I had been waiting for for my entire life. The reaping day after I turn 18.
Here in district two, every child goes trough very rigorous training in the training academy from a young age. Once kids turn 18 they are given examinations to see how fit for the games they are, and the best boy and girl are reaped.
I'm walking towards the Justice Building along with all the other teenagers of district two. None of the kids under 18 were going to be reaped as they were still going through the academy, but they still had to attend the ceremony. The adrenaline was eating at me. I think I had done well at my evaluation, but who knows.
I tried to keep my head held high to give an illusion of confidence, but my hands were restlessly fidgeting with my copper colored dress. I walked up to the table where a middle aged man pricked my finger with a needle.
"You're good to go." He says.
"Thanks," I say, still desperately trying to hide how nervous I was. I walk to the front of the crowd where all the 18 year old girls gather.
I look through the crowd, and my eyes land on Zephyr Maddox. We had been best friends since we were toddlers. He met my eyes and gave me a meek smile. I smile back. He has fiery auburn hair and bright emerald eyes and possibly the most charming smiles I've ever seen that makes him stand out in any and every crowd.
Gordian Azai came up on the stage looking as normal as a capital citizen could. He had a bright green satin dress shirt underneath a coat with stripes of red and daffodil yellow. He was the man who was assigned with both announcing the tributes and the escorting them to the Capitol.
"Welcome, everyone, to the reaping of the 71st annual Hunger Games! As always, good luck, and may the odds may be ever in your favor. Now, for a short video from the Capitol." He announced. And so the short video that was played every year started, reminding everyone of the uprising and why the Hunger Games are necessary and all of that.
"And of course... we start with the girls." Gordion announced with a little too much excitement. He walked over to small wooden table to his left. There was a singular slip of paper on the table. He picked it up gingerly and unfolded it.
"Our female tribute is none other than... Y/n Y/l/n!" I could hear the thunderous applause erupting from the crowd. It took me a second to process that my name had been called. When it did set in, a smile spread on my face from ear to ear. I straightened my posture as I slowly walked up onto the stage. I began waving and smiling at the crowd, trying to look pleasing not only to the people in my district, but to those in the Capitol as well.
"Wonderful! Wonderful!" Gordion cheered. When the crowd finally died down enough, Gordion walked over to an identical table to his right.
"And now... for the boys," he says, picking up the other slip of paper. "Valerian Argyros!"
There was another loud round of applause from the audience. As he walked on stage, I gulped. Valerian was maybe 6'7 and 270 pounds, and from what I have seen of him, an incredible fighter. Which, would make him a good ally, but if it came down to the two of us, he could easily take me out. As he comes to stand next to me, I turn and extend my hand out to him. As he shakes my hand, I give him a smirk, which he returns. The two of us are then ushered into the Justice Building. We were escorted to separate rooms by peacekeepers. I sat in silence for a few minutes before the door suddenly opened. I saw my Tatiana, one of my best friends, standing in font of me surrounded by peacekeepers. She stumbled into the room, one of the peacekeepers closing the door behind her.
"Congratulations." She said, looking slightly nervous.
"Thanks. Hey, it's gonna be fine, you know I'm going to win." I assured her, wrapping my arms around her. She hugged me back. After she broke the hug, she placed something in my hand. I observed it, curious as to what is was.
"What is this?" I ask.
"It's a brooch. My parents says it was called fleur-de-lis before the dark days. I thought it could be your district token."
"Alright." I respond smiling.
"I should go." She says, tears threatening to fall from her eyes. She turned quickly and jogged out of the room.
The next people to come visit were my parents. They basically just reminded me about how much I needed to win to bring honor to our district. The next person who came in was Zephyr.
"Congratulations!" He says, hugging me.
"Thanks." I respond.
His face suddenly darkens.
"Y/n, listen to me. You need to win this. You need to. Not just for the district, but for everyone you love. You know how devastated Axel would be if you died, I don't think he would ever get over it." He says sternly. My mind drifts to Axel, Zephyr's little brother. I had loved him like a brother. I already was sure I could win this, but the thought of never hearing his little hearty laugh was too hard to bear.
"I'm going to win. You know that." I say, sounding unintentionally curt.
"I know." He responds. We stand in silence for a minute or so before a peacekeeper comes in. Zephyr turns on his heels and walks out without another word.
Once he left, there was radio silence for maybe ten minutes. I just sat there and fiddled with the brooch Tatiana gave me.
A peacekeeper burst through the door. "Come on, it's time to go." I didn't say anything, but immediately stood up and followed him. Outside I found Valerian and Gordion waiting for me. Gordion quickly ushered us to the station where a train was patiently waiting for us. When we got on and the doors closed, I started looking around, as everything was beautiful.
Gordion interrupted my thoughts saying "My dear, please do make yourself at home. Before you know it, we'll be in the Capitol."
