Gabriel's PoV
What a difficult and confusing girl, I thought to myself as I watched Nyx briskly walk out of my classroom. She had all but immediately and wholeheartedly rejected my offer for the summer job; I was sure she would have leapt at the chance to do some more learning and teaching. But, instead, she turned down the offer, making up some excuse, and nearly ran away from my classroom. Most girls would have jumped up and down, screaming to the Heavens just for a single moment to spend with me; she...she seemed uneasy and untrusting if anything
I cocked my head, thinking back to when I had asked her to stay after so we could talk; I could almost swear that there was a hint of disgust in her eyes before she had covertly masked it over with cool indifference. But, no matter how hard she tried to remain as if she didn't care, her body had said otherwise. I could hear her heart and the way it pounded hard and fast as I asked her to stay behind, I could see the small beads of sweat begin on her forehead, and I watched her mind race with a million different thoughts, all while maintaining that posture and attitude of someone who just didn't care. I would almost congratulate her on how well she did by keeping it together, for I know she is a very quiet person by nature. But, I did say almost, remember?
If I wasn't an archangel, and the archangel Gabriel, mind you, I wouldn't have been to hear or see any of those things, and more, as a mere mortal. But, I was Blessed enough to be given this great chance by the Good Man himself. I was only stationed here originally to keep an eye on the mortals, to send reports back to the Heavens daily about whether or not everything down here on this mortal plain was as peaceful as it looked. It had been awhile since anyone had seen or heard from the "forces of evil". I snorted at that thought, what a cliché saying.
In truth, all of the archangels had been sent down to watch over this plain; to be honest, things had been eerily silent for a few decades. The demons and their counterparts, the vampires, werewolves, witches, among others that we will discuss later, have been quiet for too long. Sure, there had been the occasional mutiny by some low-level Hell deities, and some attacks from the smaller fish, but, then the archangels of Hell emerge.
These Fallen Angels, as they are more commonly known as, fall from Heaven and either live on Earth or in Hell. Some of the more powerful ones gain a position of power in the ever changing hierarchy of the Underworld. They are known only as the Princes of Hell and they refer directly to the King of Hell himself, Lucifer. They carry out His wishes and commands but, are also sent to stop the squabbles amongst the otherworldly creatures and drag the troublemakers all back to the Underworld. After their appearance is made and everything is said and done, the whole supernatural side of the world goes quiet. And that is not normal for Hell.
In fact, it was so unusual for the world to be so peaceful that God himself sent down my fellow brothers and myself to observe this plain. We were each tasked with the seven continents of this world, one continent for each brother. Not many people know that there are indeed seven of us; people know mostly only of Michael, Raphael, and I, Gabriel. But, there are four more: Uriel, archangel of salvation and in charge of Africa, Raguel, archangel of justice and vengeance and in charge of Asia, Remiel, archangel of the Fallen Watchers and in charge of Australia, and Saraqael, archangel of death and protection and in charge of South America. Michael is the leader of the angels and in charge of Europe, Raphael is the healer and in charge of Antarctica, and I myself am the messenger of God and am in charge of North America.
However, besides the little unknown fact that there are indeed seven of us, there is one more detail that scriptures do not mention. Maybe it was because it just never got around to being mentioned, or maybe it was because no one in Heaven wished to talk about it. My brother and fellow archangel Remiel was here long before the rest of us touched down on this plain to observe the happenings. He is in charge of the Fallen Watchers, those who disgrace Heaven in some way and are cast down to Earth. He keeps track of the fallen ones and helps them pass through to the mortal realm. In other words, he is just an over-glorified gate keeper, as those in Heaven like to whisper, but none will dare say it to his face. He takes his job very seriously; he has mentioned to me offhand that he enjoys it so much because he does not have to be surrounded by the constant back-room politics and the same boring people in Heaven. He claims that each fallen angel he meets and guides brings with them an interesting story, a new view point to see from. Personally, I don't see the point but, as long as there is someone doing the job, I don't care.
