Nixon and I walked to the bus stop in silence. It was awkward and uncomfortable.
"You might find some bitches at this school." Nixon warned me as we found some seats on the bus and sat down.
"Nothing new there then." I said stating the obvious.
"I'm guessing your old school had bitches too." Nixon laughed.
"Yeah." I laughed with him.
The bus soon pulled into the bus stop on the school grounds and the doors opened for the students to get out.
Nixon and I waited until the bus cleared before getting off.
As we left the bus, the school gained more people. Couples were walking into the building holding hands, boys were pulling pranks on innocent people, the cheerleaders were practicing their latest cheer in their tiny uniforms and teachers were leaving their cars and entering the school building with their brief cases.
"Busy school." I said watching the number of students build up.
"Be careful who you mix with though, a lot of them aren't the best of people to get involved with." Nixon said as we walked into the school.
The halls were piled with people slamming lockers and chatting away. Boys were pulling pranks as they were outside and a group of girls had taken over a particular part of the main hall.
"Don't go near them." Nixon whispered in my ear avoiding any unwanted attention.
I nodded in approval. I knew girls in big groups were to be avoided so I took knowledge of what Nixon said, even though I was fully aware of it myself, and looked away as we walked passed.
Sadly, that wasn't good enough.
"Looks like we have a new girl." The tall, blonde haired, skinny one said. She looked as though she was the head girl of the group as she stood out the most.
"Leave her alone Tiffany." Nixon snapped.
"Oh shut up Nixon. Let her speak." She said putting her hands on her perfect hips.
"You don't have any business with her." Nixon told her firmly.
"No, it's OK." I said to Nixon. I took one step closer to the group of girls and put my hands on my hips in the same manner as Tiffany to mock her. "Yes, I am new. My name is Alison and to be quite honest with you, it's not exactly a pleasure to meet you. Now, I'm sure you have things todo just as much as I do and therefore this discussion shall go no further. Goodbye." I turned away and walked down the hall.
"Nice shit!" Nixon said amazed as he chased after me down the hall.
I stopped as he reached me as I had no idea where I was going. The dramatic exit had to be done whether I knew where I was going or not. "Where to?" I asked.
"You're going to want to go to the head's office. He'll give you your timetable and a small map of the school. Meet me afterwards and I'll give you a tour." He said to me as he guided me down another hall containing many rooms.
"OK and where do I meet you?" I asked following him.
"On the map there should be a mark to show you where the lockers are near the gym. Find your way to the gym and you can find the bunch of lockers from there." He informed me.
We suddenly came to a halt outside a very important door. The head master's office.
"Good luck." Nixon gestured to the door and left me stranded in the hall outside the door.
I knocked lightly on the door and it swung open.
"Ah you must be the new student." The head master said. He stood tall and proud. He had a broad back and a bulky frame. His hair was a very light brown an his eyes were a grey that sat near a faded blue.
"Yes sir." I said standing in the doorway of his office.
"Do come in." He said gesturing his hands to say that it was okay to go in.
I followed his hands and walked into his office and sat down.
He perched himself at his desk in front of two chairs, one of which I chose to sit on. "So you must be Alison Brown. Am I correct?" He asked as he turned around and rummaged inside a draw behind him.
"Yes sir." I said politely.
He handed me a sheet of paper with a map on it just as Nixon said. He began pointing at certain parts of the map and giving me information on the places. "Over here is the cafeteria. Lunch is after your third lesson and will be for an hour and ten minutes." He told me.
I nodded to show I was listening.
He pointed at another part of the map. "Here is the gym. You should have physical education three times a week but we also have after school sports if you wish to join. The information for that is given if you ask the head of the physical education department. There are also lockers outside the gym. They are not gym lockers, they are only for storing things such as school books or equipment needed for certain lessons. Do not abuse any locker you are given regardless of where it is in the school grounds." He said.
"Yes sir." I nodded in approval to prove I wouldn't cause any disruption to the school.
Soon he finished laying down the rules and the information regarding the school grounds. "Here is your timetable and welcome to Darton High School." He smiled in gratitude.
"Thank you sir." I left his office and began to find my way to the gym lockers where Nixon had told me to meet him.
"Well you beat the time I thought you'd get here by." Nixon teased as I approached the lockers.
"It's not much of a maze around here as I thought it would be." I told him.
"Did you get your locker number?" He asked.
"Yeah, here." I handed him the sheet with my locker number on it.
"Thirty-four." He mumbled as he read it out. "Lucky! That's one of the biggest lockers here." He moaned.
I smiled at the jealousy on his face.
"I'm going to hate this." He said handing me the sheet back. "Your locker is there." He pointed to the large one at the end of the stack of lockers.
"Why are you going to hate this?" I asked.
"Because I lost a bet about a month ago to get it. My mate got it instead and made me suffer whilst he gloated about how cool it was. He left about a week ago so I was going to get it but now you have it." He said sighing.
"It's just a locker but you can have it if you like." I said.
"No, it's okay. I'll just keep my guitar and skateboard in the back room." He said in a sarcastic way as if to ask for sympathy.
"Im not taking the piss here but how about I make a bet with you?" I asked him.
He perked his head up slightly. "You want to see me loose?" He asked.
"No, I noticed that you said you have a skateboard so I want to see your skills." I said eager to see how good he was.
"Oh, I'm not allowed to board anymore." He suddenly said. "I'm just used to taking my board everywhere." He told me.
"Oh, how come?" I asked curiously.
"It's just something that happened a little while ago. That's all." Nixon turned away and started to walk down the hall, leaving me stranded.
The question began to echo in my head. What happened?
