SUBSTANCE ABUSEFrom the moment Jaxon Ellis came out of the womb, his entire future had already been handed to him on a fancy silver platter. His father was an NFL player, and damn good one at that. It was only natural that he would want his son to inherit his love for the game. If that didn't work there was always his mother, who taught at Duke College, also known as one of the best colleges in North Carolina. Because of his parents wide success, Jaxon had been born as a kook (much to his dismay). However that hasn't always been the case for him. There was a time where Jaxon enjoyed being rich, not having to work numerous jobs a day to keep a roof over his head like the kids on the Southside had to do. Jaxon used to smile proudly whenever he would arrive to one of the many dinners he would be forced to attend with numerous kooks, laughing at jokes weren't really funny but he felt forced to react so he wouldn't stand out from anyone. Because on figure eight, standing out was the last thing you wanted to do. No, blending in was the key.
That was until he stumbled upon Pope Heyward freshmen year of high school working midsummers. Pouges were known to be at the event quite often, for it was how they kept a roof over their head during the summer. Jaxon had noticed the boy talking with his father, and for some reason he seemed to have been immediately captivated by his presence. His laugh, it was music to his ears. His smile, it was as if nothing else in the world mattered but that smile. Jaxons parents had always told him that befriending pouges was a terrible idea, that they would bring nothing but trouble to everyone they came across.
Jaxon didn't care though. He befriended Pope that same night, complimenting him on his cooking skills and telling him that he had talent. Pope had been shocked that a kook was being nice to him, yet nonetheless he still went with the flow and accepted it. That night after midsummers, the two begun to hang out, whether it was at the beach or on abandoned rooftops. Neither wanted to really make their friendship public, for that would cause an entire civil war on the small island. Pouges and kooks were meant to be rivals, not friends. Jaxon knew that for a fact, being forced to listen to his friends ramble about how much they hated the kids from the cut. He felt as if he was doing himself a favor by keeping what he had with Pope a secret.
Over time, the small friendship that they had shared blossomed into something so much more. The night before summer was officially over, Pope had kissed. It was sweet, and everything about it was so perfect Jaxon sometimes thought it had all been a dream. However Pope didn't feel the same, for he had burst out into tears moments later and apologized repeatedly like a complete manic. It took Jaxon kissing him once more to make him realize that it was all going to work out.
Soon after the kiss, Jaxon and Pope had a long discussion about what to do next. Clearly they couldn't come clean with their relationship. For one, Jaxons parents would drop dead before letting their son date a Pouge, yet alone a boy. His friends were the same way, only they didn't care if he was into boys. It was just the Pouge factor that would send him over the edge. For Pope, it was sort of different. Both his parents and friends wouldn't care if he dated a guy, but they would for sure have something to say if he was a kook. In conclusion, there was only one way yo fix the situation they had gotten themselves involved in.
Keeping their relationship a secret. It was a risky move, however it was what needed to be done if they were going to keep seeing each other. Months had passed since they first kissed, and Jaxon and Pope had been working as hard as they possibly could to keep their relationship private from everybody. But when the annual kegger rolls around and Jaxon and Pope just so happen to run into each other, their worlds manage to merge together for about the millionth time. Not to mention Pope accidentally dragging his secret boyfriend into a lost treasure hunt that could put both of their lives at risk.
