Chapter 8

Thirty Days Later

Since Selah heard the story of Dawoo she had not seen him. Was Joel Dawoo? The sketch was a dead ringer for him. They bathed Selah on oils salts and roses encompassed her in white sage smoke. They painted the pier she would walk at sunset in red animal blood that would be dry by the time she walked barefoot.

They painted symbols on her using her mothers blood which they extracted before she passed keeping the blood cold for the ceremony. They used white ash off the boat of rising decorating her face arms and hair. Selah wore something from ten ancestors back including the baby she heard about 30 days prior if the story was true.

They braided 10 plats of her ancestors hair in her head when they remove them that night they will take a plat of her hair to make the 11th Queen. They adorned her with a crown of spotted eagle feathers a crown her mother made for her to wear before her passing as all mother's made for their daughter's. Do not cry the Priestess dressing her said low trying not to cry herself we ran out of ancestral ash if you cry you will streak it Selah. Mess up my makeup priestess? Heheheh yes mess up your makeup as human women say.

Look at you? The village sketch artist was there the whole time. Selah starer in the looking glass at her crown is that gold she whispered? Where did she get gold? The priestess grinned from a revenge request. When? Mother was too old. A banshee always has one last scream in her so her daughter can look royal on her special day. The priestess hugged Selah careful not to smudge her ceremonial markings. Come the suns set soon.

The women opened the tent Selah stepped out every banshee kneeled before her face to the ground. She caught Kasha looking up staring evilly. Selah stopped staring at Kahsa her mother pushed her head to the ground hard to show Selah she was not on board with her insolence.

Selah kept walking the sun causing her skin to glow beautifully in the setting of the sun. The oranges and gold accenting her apparent beauty. The 12 year old holding her robes behind her as she walked keeping dirt off the robe and Selah as she made her way to the mouth of the village. The entire village of woman rose following their new leader to the pier.

When they arrived the men were already seated on the rocks in the surrounding mountains of the ceremonial grounds. Bowls of magnolia pedals sat everywhere the sign of purity. Selah made her way to the main priestess at the piers end all three suns were setting behind her. Ceremonial torches were lit burning frankincense and murhh.

Selah began to sing the words of the first rites. She sang on key and beautifully as she recalled practicing in front of her mother less than three months ago. Together they laughed when she was off key or missed important words. Her mother was light
hearted when she should have chastised or warned her to be serious. She didn't she'd only say okay Selah you are the one who will laugh now and cry later smiling like the cat that swallowed the canary.

That was enough to make her become serious and pay attention. The priestess and her took turns singing. They painted blood on her forehead that of hers and and mother's combined. The rest she drank which almost caused her to purge. The priestess gave her a look of hold that down purge later.

We welcome our sister Selah as our new Banshee Queen! The symbols glowed a bright silver disappearing as her skin absorbed the blessed symbols made of blood. The one on her forehead also gone which was proof she had the blessing of the ancestors to lead the Banshee people. After the glow died down Selah smiled relived the ancestors approved of her leadership. Everyone picked up the flower bowls tossing them at her as she walked back down the pier to the celebration grounds everyone inhaled shocked. The crowd was still and quiet.

In their hands were Magnolia leaves but as they tossed the fragrantly soft leaves in the air they mystically transformed into gaping red rose perfumed petals. Selah opened her hands smiling holding her hands out to catch the gift blessed to her.

You are Dawoo she whispered adoring her secret suitor.

Selah was escorted to her tent im fine she said dismissing her lady maid sisters. I can undress myself. But my queen we have to remove the old locks of hair and yours please. Selah tipsy nodded yes. Take my lock from the left side middle cut from the scalp so my hair does not appear uneven. Sister please. Yes my Queen. They unbraided the locks placing them in a box praying when they sealed it they exited quickly. Selah buttoned the tent entrance from the inside for privacy.
How will I get out if you lock me in my Queen? Joel Selah hugged him he hugged her back smelling her hair. You are so tall she stared up in his eyes.

They sat she stared at him. What did you want to ask me young Queen? The village storyteller came in to see me she read a story of old. In this story they spoke of an old God one they gave the name trickster. Joel smiled as she continued he was a Banshee prince when the scream and howl belonged to men not women.

He wanted to be free like me she touched her heart. It is so hard to walked through earth's door to fulfill revenge requests and just leave Joel. She kept her voice low as she kept counsel with him. There was a time I was not going to return I never told anyone that I always kept it to myself. If it had not been for me breaking my mother's heart I wouldn't have Joel.

Selah wiped her eyes. And now my Queen? Where am I going with these? Pointing to her horns no, the time to escape is over my friend. Why does the Queen want to leave her kingdom when all is at her feet? What vexes you so badly? Selah was quiet speak it and relieve yourself of the boulders of truth resting on your shoulders. I want a husband and a family. I don't want to give up my boy child because he is not a girl. I do not want to hide my love for a man as my mother did and many women here do.

I want to love without judgement and eyes of disdain and hate on my flesh. Tell me about the end of this fairy tale young Queen? Selah sniffled wiping her nose oh, she giggled the king wanted the same as I do but he made an agreement with a wicked witch. She promised they could leave and travel dimensions but when the king died his father she forced him to take his seat so she could be Queen.

Shortly there after she poisoned him thinking he would be dead and she would be named Banshee Queen by the great Banshee spirit. The Banshee king made a deal with the Gods her treachery was paid by the trickster she died with him and the great Banshee spirit was cast into a common baby an innocent. His brother angry sperated men and women banshee stripping away the family love. Why Selah? So if his brother returned it would be forbidden for him to marry a banshee woman.

Joel wiped his eyes. Why are you crying? Selah asked pouring him a glass of honey comb wine with bee stings Joel sipped saying nothing. They said this tricksters name and drew a photo of him for the fairy book. He was a dead ringer for you Joel.

Tell me my lord are you the Banshee king named Dawoo? He leaned in kissing Selah standing she stood with him. He pulled her close to his strong body the embrace was wonderful the chemistry between them deep. He put his mouth to her ear kissing her lobe. Chilis ran down her spine goosebumps and short hairs stood to attention.

Yesssss.....

When Selah opened her eyes Dawoo was gone the tent entrance unbuttoned.
