If me and Freya had a camera for every stupid thing we've done, this week would be the highlight for sure.
We've spent the better part of a week trying to bring back our Jesse, and so far... it's a fail. At least it's not from lack of trying, turns out my cousin is actually a stubborn fucker.
Between those antics, I also got signed off by the doctors so I can hit the field again. Nothing feels better than that first crunch of the fresh cut grass beneath your cleats, unless you have a girlfriend like mine, then doing anything with her is automatically better, obviously.
"You're one lucky sonuvabitch, I'll give you that." Don tosses the ball my way. "Try not to fuck it up this time, huh?"
I follow his gaze line, seeing Freya sitting in the stands, a pile of open books laying on her lap, KQ talks beside her with a deep crease between his brow.
Turning back to my friend, I over head the ball back to him. "By the skin of my teeth." I admit. "Don't plan on letting anything get between us again."
Donovan gives me a knowing nod of the head just as Jesse finishes his lap around the field, stopping a few feet away from us.
An unsettling feeling twists my stomach when our eyes meet. He's void of anything, completely blank, like a ghost within himself.
It's clear to me now, more than ever, why Freya is determined to bring back the Jesse we all knew, the cousin I love, the friend, and blood who would do anything for the people he cared about.
My partner in crime since before we could talk.
Dragging his focus in front of him, unbothered, he gives Coach a nod, who in return blows his whistle snapping Jesse into motion as he takes off.
"Still nothing?" Don winces, a tinge of pity in his expression.
I shake my head, looking back up to the stands to see Freya's attention is in Jesse's direction. As if sensing me, she slides her eyes my way. A sad look in those normally bright eyes.
I give her a nose scrunching smile, a small gesture to let her know it's going to be okay.
"He'll come around," I deflect, not actually sure of my words anymore. "I think Freya's just too nice, she can't stand this rift in the group, thinks it's because of her."
"Yeah?" He asks, slightly taken back. "Tried locking him in a room?"
I huff out an exhausted laugh. "Don't say that in front of Freya, she's one more failed plan away from doing just that."
Donovan falls in line with me as we head to the seats to grab our shit, he lets out a low chuckle.
