chapter 7 - jensen

"Come on, now, come on! Wake up, come back to us!"

I slowly regained consciousness, my eyelids fluttering open. The stern and anxious voice that I had heard must have belonged to a man standing over me, looking into my eyes with a look of sheer terror on his face. He had tousled brown hair and a perfectly groomed mustache, complemented by large round glasses that framed his worried eyes.

Disorientation washed over me as I tried to piece together what had happened. The memory of the ceiling collapsing flooded back, and the air was thick with dust. The unmistakable scent of earth filled my nostrils. Panic gripped at my heart as I remembered tripping and blacking out, my last memories before darkness had consumed me.

"She's awake! She's awake!" The man's voice was filled with relief and joy. Two other unfamiliar faces came into view. One was an older man with a long grey beard, dressed in some sort of animal pelt, exuding a ruggedness that hinted at a life spent in the wilderness. The other was a dark-skinned woman who appeared to be around my age, wearing white scrubs and sporting a short pink bob that added a touch of vibrancy to her presence.

I looked back at the first man, the one whose voice I had heard, and saw the stethoscope hanging around his neck. I felt a wave of relief as I realized I was in the company of a doctor and a nurse, but it was short lived as a sharp, shooting pain shot through my leg, bringing me back to the reality of the situation.

"Please...help..." I stammered anxiously, struggling to find my voice. I attempted to sit up, but the doctor gently pushed my forehead back down, urging me to lie still. "It's okay, we're gonna get you out of here, but I need you to lie down for a moment. You were unconscious, so I don't want you sitting up too fast. My name is Doctor Harvey, this is my nurse, Maru, and this man over here is Linus. He's the one who found you after the cave collapsed. Can you remember your name?"

"Yes..." I gasped for breath, as my anxiety was making it difficult to get enough air. "My name is Jensen."

"Good. Do you know where you are?" Dr. Harvey asked, his soothing voice providing a sense of calm amidst the chaos. He looked to be a little older than me, and wore a white dress shirt with slacks, a bright green overcoat, and a red tie. I would've paid more attention to how strikingly handsome he was in any other circumstances.

"I'm outside a cave in Stardew Valley," I replied, my voice strained but determined.

"Very good. Maru, check for concussion, please," Dr. Harvey instructed. "Linus, thank you for all your help. We really appreciate that."

"Of course, Dr. Harvey," Linus replied. He leaned over me and said reassuringly, "I'm glad I found you when I did, Jensen. You're in very good hands, now."

"Thank you so much," I replied. I felt incredibly grateful for this strange mystery man. He gave me a nod before disappearing into the forest, leaving me with the doctor and his nurse.

"Hi, Jensen, I'm Maru," began Dr. Harvey's nurse, her voice warm and comforting. "I'm just going to check your eyes, okay, honey?" Maru shone a small flashlight into both of my eyes before turning to Dr. Harvey and saying, "Normal reactions, doc." The doctor visibly relaxed, a sense of relief washing over his face.

I groaned loudly as the pain suddenly shot through my leg once again with an overwhelming intensity. Dr. Harvey gently shushed me, his voice a soothing contrast against the agony.

"Jensen, it looks like you have an open ankle fracture. We're going to have to take you back to the hospital and operate immediately."

I yelped out in a mixture of pain and fear, the news hitting me like a brick wall. "Open fracture? What?"

"Your bone is protruding out of the skin, Jensen," Dr. Harvey responded calmly, his voice tinged with a mixture of compassion and professionalism.

I couldn't contain my anguish any longer, and a piercing scream escaped my lips, echoing through the cavernous space. Before I knew it, my blurry vision became engulfed in darkness once again, and the world faded away.
