HARREL HORNE
“And as for the mysterious gleam reached out to those who are unlit, the blind cannot see the light.
‘How do you touch the heart of the blind? He, whose heart is a barren selenite...’”
The elegies took up a great quantity of the pages at the backside of my notebook, if to exclude the number of drawings and notes. I ticked my pencil, my right foot tapped the floor as I helplessly tried to think of something to add to the verse.
“The unlit torch inside of such man, shall it dissipate? Before the gleam’s conduct had began.
‘There is sun, there is night. For who all of us who still wishes to fight—
As long as the sun rises, we become like the moon. As the sun falls, we rise. And as long as the moon rises, we become like the sun. As the moon falls, the sun—us, we rise.”
“It's not that hard,” someone voiced.
A cold, clear, authoritative, assertive voice.
Mistress Blanca scanned her hawk-like eyes throughout the room, it was a terror to look at—it does make you feel it shall go beyond the surface of your eyes. “I may remind each and everyone of you to do your best this semester!”
She hit her long stick on someone’s table in front. The student flinched.
“Let us see who—amongst you, will fall; and who amongst you, shall rise. The world spins. Time waits for no one. Time waits for no man. The world keeps spinning. There are times when you find yourself standing on top—but this can be taken away from you.”
She spoke the last sentence merely whispering—as if daunting…teasing…mocking…scaring us.
“It keeps spinning after all. Never halts. Pour all your blood, sweat and tears. This is a place—a moment, where you all strive to be the best. Be determined to be on top of the food chain, on top of the hierarchy, because if you won't—all that’s left for you are worms waiting to enter your decaying body. Inside this classroom is a battle of wits. A battle of who’s the smartest, the best and the wisest. The person who always set his or her eyes on the goal will achieve success. Will sit on top of the pyramid. He or she will live a marvelous life. He or she wins the race of optimistic rats who seeks opportunities. I know all of you are doing good, but your good may never be enough.”
