"Where's your prom date, Ronnie?" Mom asked as she adjusted Nathan's tie.
"Eh, he's meeting me there since I'm going with these two." She shrugged.
"Oh, he just doesn't want to meet your adoptive mothers?" Ms. Stanton laughed as she fixed my hair.
Ronnie made a guilty, apologetic look.
We laughed and as soon as my hair looked proper, it was time to take pictures. I took a few with Ty, a few with just me and Ronnie, Ronnie and Nate took some, Ronnie took some by herself, Nate took some by himself. Nathan took some with his mom and I took some with my own mom, and then we switched moms, and the last few pictures were us looking all couple-ish. We were kissing in some, holding hands in others, and just neing cutesy.
"I hate to break up them being all cutesy and stuff," Ronnie said. "But can we get this show on the road?"
After extensive whining, our mothers let us go.
Prom was being held in our town's dance hall which was pretty huge and fancy.
Ronnie and I blasted A Day To Remember while Nate tried to switch it to Asking Alexandria. I reminded him who was the one who wanted some tonight. That made him keep his hands to himself and not on my radio. When we got there, Ronnie ditched us for her date, Jeremy. He offered me a wave, and I offered him one back. He looked like he kinda wanted to die.
"So you wanna go dance?" Nate said as he handed them our tickets.
"Eh, why not." I shrugged.
People crowded the dance floor and Rihanna started playing so we jumped around. Songs changed and people went wild and I was getting tired and it was only half way in.
Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran began playing and Nate wrapped me in his arms as we swayed, slow dancing.
"Nathan?" I whispered close to his ear.
"You want this to be our song or something?" He asked, cheesily.
I smiled and kissed his cheek. "Something like that."
We made out a little, danced some more, made out more, and just kept it up.
Close to the end of the night, Nathan's phone began to go off.
"It's Alyssa." He explained as he hit answer and set it to his ear.
I couldn't help but feel a little jealous.
I couldn't hear her on the other end of the line, but the face he was making made me nervous. "Are you serious? Okay, I'll be right there." He hung up and looked at me. "Alyssa's water broke."
"Really?" I chewed my lip and he nodded. "Oh." My stomach dropped. I hesitated, feeling selfish. "...What should I do?"
"Go to the hotel or stay here or something, Maxey, I have to go. I'm so sorry."
"I'll drive you to the hospital. She needs you more than I do."
He hesitated, looking like he was about to protest but thought against it and headed for the front doors instead.
I figured it would be best to just drop him off at the hospital, we didn't even say anything to one another. He jumped out of my truck and sprinted for the double doors of the labor and delivery ward while I returned to the hotel.
I let myself into our room and just sat on the bed. The feeling of jealousy was back. It was overwhelming me...and I didn't want it to. I pressed my palms into my eyes and fell back onto the bed. This was just the reality of things now. Just when I thought I'd be Nate's number one, I got pushed back in line again.
