AN and Explanation at end. This chapter is very important.
Maybelle's body had stilled, her every bone in her body becoming tense as she digested the information, "You," she said pausing briefly to point a shaky finger at Mr. Mabry, "are no father to me."
Then May ran away. Mrs. Mabry had grabbed her wrist before she could leave the room and rushed out, "Maybelle, you must understand-"
"Understand what?" May spat, "That everything I have ever known was a life out of your own selfishness?"
A regretful look etched its way into her mother's eyes, and she made a move to speak again but May ripped her hand out of her grasp, "No. Do not speak. There is nothing more that needs to be said from either of you."
Maybelle fled after that, hearing the last words of her mother's voice as she got farther away, "We do care for you."
Care for her? How could two people who killed her parents and sabotaged the life that she was meant to live, love her? They knew nothing of her, and now, Maybelle knew nothing of herself too.
Who was she? What was she? She had to return to Wyatt. She knew that he had the answers, and that throughout all of the chaos, he was right about everything.
And she wanted those answers.
May ran back down the streets, anger and frustration pulsing through her veins. Thoughts of Mr. and Mrs. Mabry flooded her mind, and the thoughts of what her real parents were like came in waves. She was not supposed to live this imprisoned life, she was not supposed to live the life that they had given to her. The life that they had made her live.
It was not fair.
And so, when May finally reached the edge of the woods, her anger was pulsating through her veins so hard that she thought she would break. She could almost feel her body changing with the changes that she had so reluctantly avoided due to Mr. and Mrs. Mabry, and it was only until she had stopped within the middle of the woods that she realized she really was changing.
A yelp escaped her lips when she saw fur breaking out from her hands, and when she turned them back over she could see claws. Now, her anger was instantly turned to fright as she realized the transition. She screamed as her bones began to crack and shift, and her long last scream then turned to a howl that tore through the air like a bullet. It echoed throughout the woods, and there was no doubt that anyone nearby heard her agony.
Black and red clouded her vision, and she could not tell if it was because her eyes were also changing or if she was in so much pain that she was going to pass out. She howled again, crying out for help only for no words to form. And when it was finally done, she lay on the ground panting for air.
Her vision soon returned to normal, and she could see the blurry image of her tattered dress all over the forest floor, blending in with the leaves that lay dead and crinkled. She wondered if she too were dead, and then she began to wonder if she was like a leaf, changing colors and wilting beneath the sun only to die when everything around her seemed to also change.
The metaphorical resemblance was an accurate one, but it did not change the fact that May had become delirious. She accepted the change, and she dared for everything around her to continue changing. Like seasons that transitioned from one to another, crinkling the leaves that fell from the trees. She was the leaf, and everything around her was the constant changing seasons. She dared for more change, and before she finally collapsed in exhaustion, she thought to herself three words that explained not only everything that had happened, but everything that was about to happen too: May Seasons Come.
AN and Explanation of the last three paragraphs...
If you are still confused by the title of this book, as well as those last few paragraphs then let me explain. Maybelle was traumatized by the past events so much that as she lay on the forest floor, she became a bit looney in thinking that she was a leaf, dying on the forest floor as the seasons around her changed. She had experienced so much that she dared for more pain and agony, for more change, therefor she dared for more change by thinking "May Seasons Come." Remember, she is not all there when she is thinking these things, but yet the metaphor is pin point because like everything that changed around her, she begins to wilt (change into a werewolf, and change into a new person). Like seasons that change, the leaves begin to wilt (change in forms of color and shape, change in forms of texture). Do you get it?
I think its brilliant, but heres another brilliant point. MAY seasons come.... May is her name. Think about the symbols in that part of the title ;)
So if you still don't get it and want a better explanation then please message me. But just know that the confusion and chaos that was expressed in those last three paragraphs was intentional, because I was trying to put you in the mind of Maybelle. Hectic and unclear.
Best,
