Maybelle's mouth had fallen slightly agape at seeing Wyatt's father with crossed arms and a fixed expression to show only mere unpleasant surprise. It seemed that the man had growled slightly, a low reverberating tone coming from his throat, resonating towards her. She gulped when his eyes left her for the bare instant to see his son still on the ground, cupping the side of his head.
"We do not welcome visitors who act the way you do. Irrational is the worst of ways to act, would you not say, Wyatt?"
Wyatt groaned, but nodded nonetheless. Then he looked up at his father and quickly replied, "but we must welcome May, for she is my mate. This is only the simplest of ways to prove that she has the ability to fight for her way, and she is strong about it."
His father snickered at that but shook his head at the both of them, "What was this all about anyhow?"
May would have rolled her eyes, noting many reasons as to why she had hit Wyatt in the back of the head with a pan, but refrained from doing so. Wyatt answered for her, only saying the most basic of reasons, "She does not believe Lycans to exist."
"Then you must make her believe!" Wyatt's father pressed, and then he turned to Maybelle and smiled slightly, "You may call me Mr. Baird, until you have proven yourself worthy of this family, only then can you call me by my first name. I do not take an instant liking to visitors who inflict pain upon my son, for it is an awful first impression."
Maybelle glared at the man and his truthful arrogance, but nevertheless she said, "Did you not consider that I might have only hurt him because he is speaking in riddles? And you seem to be no different."
"How so?" He pressed once more.
"Lycans," she sneered, "they do not exist!"
A long drawn out sigh escaped Mr. Baird's lips, and a stressed hand rubbed over his face as he looked at his son who was now standing to his feet, "I suggest that you take her outside and show her."
Wyatt nodded but with a worried expression on his face. And just like that, Mr. Baird left them in the kitchen.
Wyatt went to the pantry and handed May a pack of crackers before taking her hand and leading her outside the backdoor again. Even though she was reluctant to, she opened the pack of crackers and put one in her mouth, all the while pondering aloud, "Where are we going?"
"Not far." He had answered her, and then stopped when they were far enough away from the house, near the bordering woods.
"What does your father want you to show me?" She asked again, and he gave a wry smile but did not answer her.
"Stay here." He said, and took off his shirt and pants. She closed her eyes with a gasp at first, making a smirk cross his face at how innocent she was. But as she heard the crunching of leaves beneath his feet, only then did she open them a little to see that he was walking away from her.
He stopped after taking five steps and turned back around, "May what little trust you have in me keep those beautiful eyes of yours open."
Maybelle seemed to not have a choice as something in him began to change. At first, she saw the goose bumps arise on his skin as his hair stuck up as if he had been shocked. Then, she dropped the crackers that were in her hand as the odd cracking of bones and tearing of flesh began. It was also the part that she had taken a step backwards, only to trip and fall on her bum. And as if that was not enough, a scream tore through her throat as fur ripped from his bare flesh, ultimately tearing the last of his garments. His bones continued to shift and mold in to something unlike anything she had seen before, until the process was entirely over and she realized it was something she had seen at least a dozen times before in books, and once in the woods with Wyatt on the way to his house. For out of all the creatures she could have seen, she saw a wolf.
The wolf itself had brown fur with blonde streaks, and honey colored eyes that were no different than the pair that belonged to Wyatt. And before she could think another thought, she knew that Wyatt had indeed shifted into this beast.
And like any human in their rightful mind, she got up and ran away from the beast. Though, she could not outrun an animal that ran on all fours, and her little legs did not get her far before it had cornered her against the very large house.
She pressed her back against the brick wall to his home, and panted heavily. Her breaths left her in a daze, as if she were not receiving enough oxygen, and without knowing it, the wolf stalked towards her. She only noticed that it was approaching her when it began to shift back into a man, a very naked looking Wyatt.
Her eyes hesitantly trialed down his defined stomach, until they stopped at his hip bones, and then she instantly looked back up to see his worried looking face. He ignored her straying eyes and focused on her wellbeing, as he caressed the side of her face and asked, "Do you feel all right"
She stuttered numerous, her breaths still leaving her in pants before she finally replied, "You do not lie."
"No," he answered her honestly, almost looking ashamed of the truth, "I do not lie."
Then he put his other hand to cheek, and cupped both of them with his hands, "Look into my eyes."
She did, but even the calmness in his eyes could not still her shaking. Wyatt gave her a small grin and whispered, "You do not need to fear what I am, for I will only use this side of me to protect you."
"Protect me?" she asked, appalled, and he nodded smiling.
"Yes, because after all," he nodded smiling again, "You are my mate."
"Mate," she drawled as if she were crazed, "I think I get it now."
And then, Maybelle lost her balance as if she was about to pass out, but she did not. Instead, she leaned on Wyatt for support and looked up at him with wide eyes, "Wolves. Mates. Fate," The words were rushing from her lips as she continued, "It makes sense now. But why?"
"Why what?" He asked worriedly, looking her over as if she were so fragile she was about to break.
"Why me?" She emphasized.
"Is it not obvious?" He asked, and she shook her head. Maybelle braced herself for the worst, but even her hope could not prepare her.
"Because," Wyatt said slowly, "You are one of us."
And with that, her eyes rolled back and she passed out, only to be caught in the strong embrace of the man who would change her life forever.
