1. Four weeks later
"Sophie? Where are you?" Their days had fallen into a routine. Each night they slept nested together, but nothing more, and each day she followed him on his rounds, assisting with the patients he saw. Returning home they ate and then he fed, and went to sleep.
But this morning she was gone when he awoke, and followed the sounds into the bath area. She was crouched by the waste receptacle and looked decidedly green. "I am sorry, I feel terrible"
Effortlessly he picked her up, "No, no, what is wrong? Let me tend to you." She looked so small lying there, as he examined her. Then the same thought occurred to both of them at the same time. His eyes lit up, and she looked frightened.
"Hold me, please. Is it what I think it is?" Those luminous eyes. Reflecting back the golden glow of his own.
"Yes, love, I think so"
She buried her face in his shoulder and managed, "Are you happy?"
"Happy? Oh, you do not know how much. Once I met you there could never be anyone else. I have loved you, Sophyaniya, and the thought that we may have a child ... It was all I could do to hold back, but I promised you time, and you may still have as much as you need. Only, n-"
She kissed him to stop the words, and said, "I think I have always loved you from the day you came to our village. I was rather small. I doubt you remember me. But I knew I would follow you one day."
He kissed her back and said, "Rest a moment, I must get something" He brought her a cool cloth for her face, and two tiny silver rings. "Would you consent to marry me, Sophyaniya?"
"Because there might be a baby? We haven't even run the test yet!"
"No, love, because of both of you. And I knew, when I picked you up, I could taste it on you. You are the mother of my child"
"Then, yes, yes"
"Then let it be so. Sophyaniya, of Namusa, will you take me, Rofin of the fifth class of the Grenf Province of the Rifan nation, as your husband, forsaking all others?"
"Yes I will. And will you, Rofin, do the same for me as long as I shall live?"
"I will. By the power invested in me by, hmm, us, I pronounce us husband and wife. May I kiss the bride?"
"You may"
extended smooch
"But, where do we go from here?"
"We'll take care of that later. Just today I want to just spend time together to celebrate"
2. Later
"Rof."
"Yes, love."
"Is it true that you know what I am thinking because of the blood you have taken?"
"hmm-mmm, well, we do have a low-level telepathic field, augmented by that; when I'm near you, yes."
"Oh. Is that how you knew about the baby?"
"That, and I have been studying you ... humans for years. A blood test would show it as well. I know your taste, it has been changing, and when I picked you up this morning it was unmistakable."
They seemed to do their best talking curled into each other like this, her back against him, his arms wrapped around her, her hands on his, together covering the place when the baby would soon show.
