A few months later, a snapshot
Serafin grew quickly. Soon he was reaching up and out and keeping both parents busy. On a rare day that Rofin was free, they headed out for a picnic.
Rofin had taken up sketching, claiming it calmed him while waiting for test results in the lab. Serafin had snagged the pad, and was busy trying to make marks on the paper.
"What's he doing?" asked Rofin.
Sophie smiled, "Imitating you, I think."
Wah! Indignant in that way only babies have, Serafin flung the marker away. He then twisted and waved chubby arms at Rofin. "I think he wants you for a change"
Rofin grinned and took the baby. "Who wants his daddy? Come here, rascal"
The sketch pad aside, marker retrieved, Sophie set out their picnic, and then leaned back, watching "her boys". How quickly things had changed. At this time last year she had bee shaking with fear, an unknown future ahead of her, only the slim hope that her plan might work. And it had, for her, and for Rofin and now Serafin.
The child had quieted and dozed off. Rofin cautiously settled him, and gave Sophie a quick kiss. "Shh! We'd better enjoy the picnic while we can!" She handed him some food and they ate.
She leaned against him, and asked quietly, "Any results yet?" Through quite a bit of trial and error they had isolated the gene that made the humans receptive, and the same in the Rifans. Tests could be made already to predict the success of a pairing, and the next work was to simplify it. What worried Sophie, and Rofin for that matter, was what would come next. Would the harac still be treated as such, valued only as food and potential breeders? In between work in the lab, Rofin was drafting ways that might be changed. His brother Talin had turned out to be a surprising help. The lazy older son was versed in Rifan law and rules, and was doing his best to find support or precedent in the Rifans rule of life.
"Talin thinks he may have found a clause. Apparently we as a species weren't always so overbearing, there was more of a collaboration in the earlier planets. He thinks we may be able to use that."
She sighed, "I hope so. I want our children to have a better future than I did."
He nodded and then stopped, "What did you say - "
She giggled and poked him in a certain sensitive area. "What did you expect? Yes, in about seven months, Serafin will have a little brother or sister!"

And that's all for now! How things will work out is undecided, and I have to see what direction this all takes. Please take a moment to comment and vote! Thank you SOOOO much for reading my little story!
