Sophie and Rofin come out from behind the screen.

"Thank you Old Mother."

She smiles. "Has he fed, then?"

"Yes. I will in turn when we get home, but we do have a number of other errands to do."

Tela looks at Rofin with approval, "Ah! You DO trust her"

"With my life. She would not let me take from any but her, and this was the best way."

"Off with you then!"

Waving, the couple leaves. After they have walked a short distance, Rofin asks, "What did she tell you?"

Sophie merely wraps an arm about his waist. "Many things. Mostly of import to women, a few that you and I will enjoy together. I lost my mother you know, and it is good to have an older women to confide in." He nods, planning to come back here soon.

"Sophie, would you like to meet my parents? My family?"

She looks at him, thoughtfully, "If you want. They should meet the mother of their grandchild."

He tightens his grip on her. "Don't be afraid when we go. They are ... not at all like me. I do not know how they will take you."

She plays with a lock of her hair that has come loose. "Won't they know, when they see your eyes? That we are well and truly bonded?"

Gold eyes, now rimmed with silver. He thinks back to their encounter with Loklin the week before when they had returned for the second test.

Last week

"So! This is the lovely lady who has captured our Rofin!" The older Rifan boomed at her from behind the counter. Sophie blushed and looked down. As much as she was at ease with Rofin and confident in her role as assistant and much more, her mind whispered, among the harac, she was still shy among the other Rifans, knowing how they considered her people. "Yes, sir"

"Oh, stop, if Rofin has given you such regard, I must give the same. Call me Loklin, as he does."

"Ye-es, Loklin"

"Now, come over, come over. He's told you what to expect?"

She nods.

"My examination room is back here, and I'll take the samples there as well. Wait a moment, Rofin, I'll call you in in a moment for your turn"

Alone, Loklin asks, "Nine weeks, eh?" She nods, "Well, let's see ... "

After the exam is finished he pats her on the shoulder and says, "Very good! You seem quite healthy. City life must agree with you."

She draws her knees up under her chin. "Rofin agrees with me. I think we could go anywhere and we would be happy."

He finishes making some notes and turns to her. "He is much happier since you came. But I do worry it may be difficult for you."

She waits.

"I don't think you are the only one" She stiffens "And the others were ... gotten rid of"

"He would not do that to me!"

"Not the women. The children. Some don't want the established order changed"

"NO! Rofin! Please!"

The door swung open and he pushed in, "What is wrong? Did he hurt you? Loklin, I will kill you if-"

"No, no, just - "She reaches for him, and he picks her up easily.

"Are you crazy? I send her in for a second opinion and- shh, shh, I am here." His hands brush her hair, calming her, and then he sets her down.

Loklin shrugs. "Apologizes, Lady. I only wished to tell you what he might not. It is not so easy as you might think to cause this type of change"

She turned then and glared at him, "And think you that I do not know that? I feared you would take our child now and send us away. You do not know how I struggled in coming here today."

Rofin stroked her back. "He knows. It is just his way. Loklin, please take what you need and let us know. You'll have the results tomorrow?"

"Tonight. I'll do them myself. I need a blood sample from you as well."

"Gladly."

Rofin offers his arm and once the blood is drawn turns to leave.

"Sophyaniya" She stops and turns to Loklin. "Yes?"

"You have already made a change," he smiles gently, "Look at his eyes. The silver was not there before."

"I see that."

"Has he told you why?"

"No-o." She traces around his eyes. "I saw that they flashed, but you are right, the silver is still there"

Rofin reached for her hands, and gently placed them near her own. "I have the color of yours now. Your eyes are grey, and I have taken in their color. Among us it is a sign of nearness, unity."

"You never told me that" She laced their fingers together. "Does this happen for all couples?"

"No. It is rather unusual, in fact." He kissed their twined fingertips. "It is a sign of especial closeness"

They are interrupted by a chuckle from Loklin. "And that, my friends, is why I was so hard on both of you. I don't want to see such a connection destroyed. And others will throw everything at you."

"We'll find a way" said Sophie.

"Ha, that is getting to be a catch-phrase"

Present

"So. They'll know, won't they?" She ducked her head, and tucks the curl behind her ear.

"I know. I hope they'll accept it." He brushes another stray lock back. "Let's finish our errands."

Notes on image used.

I found it is few places, so I don't know who to credit. It seems to belong to a character named Ino. I read some fanfiction and really like her. Maybe I can bring her into the story later. Sophie could use a smart-alec friend.

Again, doesn;t look like Sophia. I really need to learn to draw decently. I mean, my girl has deep red hair and lightly bronze skin. But the image was cute, and they are dealing with the fact that baby's not going away ...
