chapter fifty three. baby connors.

"MICKEY!" MAXINE YELLED from her spot on the couch but there was no answer, "Mickey!"

Mickey jogged down the stairs and over to Maxine with his hands on her hips, "Yes Maxine"

Maxine looked up at the taller man and she swallowed the lump in her throat and she studied him. She couldn't help it, the hormones were eating her alive. He always had an amazing body, even when they were dating in college but since Mickey had started the fire academy, she couldn't help but stare and the amount of tattoos he's added to his chest and arms since they broke up was crazy but it made him hotter.

"Maxine, my eyes are up here" he smirked, pointing up from his waist to his pretty green eyes. Maxine cleared her throat, "Um, sorry. I—"

Mickey sat on the coffee table in front of the pregnant woman and placed his right hand on her thigh, "Don't ever apologize to me, Max. I like it when you stare at me"

Maxine raised an eyebrow, "good to know"

Mickey smiled, looking at her pouty lips a little longer than he should have then cleared his throat. "So what's up?"

"Can you get me the remote? It's over on the chair and I can't move" Maxine said, pointing to the black controller on the other side of the room.

Mickey chuckles, "sure" then he stands up go grab the remote and hands it her and kisses her forehead, "you're cute, you know that?"

"I'm nine months pregnant. Ready to pop at any moment. I feel fat" she sighed, resting her head on the back of the couch. Mickey sat next to her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders to bring her closer to him, "you're not fat, Max. You're having twins. Miracle babies"

Maxine leaned her head on his shoulder, "I wish Mav was here. I wish he could meet our babies"

"I know, Max. But he's always with you, yknow that right? He's always looking over you and the twins"

"You think?"

"Oh yeah. How could he not. Just look at how glowing you are and how amazing you've done since he's left"

Tears began to pool in Maxines chocolate brown eyes, "stop. You don't mean that"

Mickey too his thumb and pointer finger and lifted up the detectives chin, "you're very special Maxine Amelia Connors and I have no doubt in my mind that you can build the best life for you and the twins"

"I love you, Mick. Thank you"

Mickey smiled softly and kissed the tip of her nose, "I love you too, Max"

TWO DAYS LATER . . .

MAXINE STOOD IN FRONT OF her and Mavericks bedroom and just stared at the floor where he died. She could still see his eyes going lifeless and she started to tear up when she felt pain and something wet running down her legs.

"Mickey!" He called out. Mickey ran out of his room, down the hall when he saw Maxine bent over in pain, "what?!"

"I think my water just broke"

Mickey's eyes lit up, "oh my god! It's happening!" Then he went to go put her arm around his and helped her down the stairs, "the overnight bag is in the car and I'll call everyone once we get to the hospital. It's finally happening"

Maxine smiled sadly. She was so excited to finally see her babies. But she was also scared she was gonna lose them like her last baby and if they made it, she was afraid she wasn't gonna make it because they were reminders of Maverick. She lost the love of her life but she didn't want to lose another piece of her again.

MICKEY LEAVES THE DELIVERY ROOM where everyone was waiting to find out how Maxine and the twins were doing and he smiled and everyone stood up.

"We got two very healthy baby boys" Mickey smiled and everyone started cheering and hugging each other, "Max is being brought back to her room right now. But she wants Hank, Bob, Adam and Hailey to see them first"

Mickey walks into the hospital room followed by Hank, Bob, Adam and Hailey to see Maxine holding both her boys and everyone smiled.

Hailey gasped and she goes to sit on the side of the bed, "they're adorable"

Maxine smiled, tears pooling in her eyes, not believing she was looking at her two beautiful boys and gestures to the blonde to take one of them, "Here, godmommy"

Hailey smiled and goes to grab him, rubbing his thumb along his cheek.

"What are their names?" Adam asks, standing behind the blonde.

"This one..." Maxine says, her hand on her baby boy who Hailey was holding, "is Axel. And this one is Sawyer"

"They're beautiful, Maxine" Bob said, trying not to cry at his grandsons. Max looked up at her family and she couldn't be happier. She just wished Mav was here to see her with their boys.

MAXINE AND MICKEY WALKED down the path towards the front of the house, both holding a baby Carrier with a sleeping baby in it. She looked at them and smiled as Mickey went to open the door.

Maxine gasped when she saw everyone she loved in her living room with a banner hanging up that read, 'WELCOME HOME' and her heart felt full.

"Welcome home Max. You and the boys" Mickey whispered in her ear. Maxine looked over at the taller man and smiled, "Thanks Mick"
