One of my very favorite things in the ENTIRE world is art. I'm a painter, songwriter, and scribe of books myself, and I can't imagine living without it. To be without such color would be so droll. But unfortunately, so many kids are being pushed away from art I guess?
I told my mom last night that I wanted to be an artist, and she freaked out. My older brother is in school to become an engineer, and my cousin (whom we practically raised) is going into bioengineering or nursing. Both well-paying fields. Being a watercolor artist or fashion designer or songwriter isn't very well paying and isn't guaranteed to make you money - we can't all be Taylor Swift - and even graphic design is highly competitive.
My parents have always pushed us away from art and artistic expression. When we were little it was cute that we did arts and crafts, but when we got older we should spend more time on math ... or chemistry ... or any of the subjects I hate.
I wish we lived in a world that accepted artists.
A lot of people think that the worst way to disappoint their fathers is to become a sex worker; my parents would at least accept that the way a toddler accepts being force-fed vegetables. At least I'd be making money! No, in my family, the way to disappoint is to become an artist or a writer. My desired fields are art, music, and fashion. Not engineering.
My dad's an engineer, and my mom's a surgeon. It's certainly cool, but I occasionally hate living in a house with people who dismiss art as the inferior occupation. It's not BAD to be an artist, and it's certainly not worse than sex work or joining the military (not that those are bad but they're highly regarded as last-resort careers; scratch that military is good because MEN are in it). I with that I lived in a world where I could write songs and paint and scribble designs of crazy dresses and I could still earn a living.
Maybe I'll have to divert towards engineering or medicine one day? Who knows. I really hope not because those fields don't appeal to me. But I can't have everything, and maybe this is my thing that I have to deal with. That sounded whiny, hold on. I love having an education and opportunities, I just want to be accepted based on my career. That's all.
