_They were eager for me to leave. I expected them to bring me here at midnight, but I was mistaken. They brought me here while the sun still glowed._Mayoress Oda showed me around before escorting me back to the room. Not without inspecting my bag and removing items she claimed would implicate me. No one told me she would take everything!
I glanced into my bag and found only a sanitary pad... and nothing else. They had taken my blanket, confiscated my foldable pillow, and seized my clothes, leaving me with only the outfit I was wearing. She said I should consider it my Christmas attire before handing me a white and black gown.
“The white is for prayers. The black is for sleeping,” she muttered, regardless of whether I overheard. “You can’t take the mosquito net. It would upset the other girls,” she snapped, taking my mosquito net.
Thankfully, she didn’t confiscate my underwear and toiletries.
This happened before she left me in the hallway to find my way back to the suffocating room. I got lost for a moment but found my way back.
Faye was already waiting for me, dressed in a black silk gown that covered her bosom. She pointed to a moldy bed and handed me a plain blanket. I can’t find the words to describe it.
It was clean and awful, yet I collected it without complaining. When my father locked me up in that hole, he didn’t give me a blanket and planned to leave me there until the next day. This is a piece of cake. I’m used to this way of life.
Faye paused with a frown on her face. “Why aren’t you asking questions? Why aren’t you shouting like the other girls who come here? Aren’t you afraid?” She laid on her bed. “You should get some sleep. Nighttime is when the activities begin.”
“What?” I asked, examining the creaky bed. I placed a foot on it to test its sturdiness. It squeaked and creaked. Just as I was about to lie down, I noticed a robust spider crawling over my pillow. I narrowed my eyes and followed its path as it moved towards Faye’s side. It was an unwelcome visitor who would not be joining me on my bed tonight.
Um... “I see a spider. It’s crawling over to...”
I didn’t finish my sentence. Chaos erupted as soon as those words left my lips.
The other girls in the room reacted. Upon hearing the word ‘spider,’ a wave of panic and revulsion washed over them.
Their faces contorted in horror, mouths agape, releasing piercing screams and shrill cries. Some jumped onto other beds, desperate to distance themselves from the tiny intruder.
Startled voices and frantic exclamations filled the air as the girls expressed their fear and disgust in a dramatic display of emotions.
“Where is it?” Faye joined in the frenzy, holding one of my crocs. I mean, I saw the spider. The spider scared me. Did Rebecca’s spirit possess all these girls? Why were they jumping around when the spider was on my bed?
“It crawled under my pillow.” I pointed to the pillow that was already on the bed when I arrived.
“Jesus Christ!” Faye raised her hand to massage the bridge of her nose. “You’re a psychopath! Only psychopaths would see a spider as big as that and not react!”
About ten girls surrounded me, trembling and shivering. “I don’t see any reason to react to it. It has its life to live, and I have mine.”
“Tell that to Jesus when it bites you and you die!” One of them yelled at me. “She didn’t even kill it! What if it crawled over to my side?” she asked, pointing at Faye, whose bed was closest to mine. “Or your side?”
