It was the morning of the visit. Chase and Rocky had woken up extra early. They looked at each other and then down at Sam, feeling a sense of sadness wash over them. They knew that he would be leaving them soon, and the thought of it was almost unbearable. But they had to be strong for Sam, and make sure that his most likely last day with them was filled with joy and happiness. They got up quietly, trying not to wake Sam, and prepared his breakfast. Chase poured him a bowl of water, while Rocky poured him a bowl of food. Sam stretched and yawned as he sat up. He looked down at the bowls and began to eat. As They watched Sam, Chase couldn't help but cry. They had only taken care of him for two days, and they already felt a connection with him. Sam looked up at Chase, He walked over to him and sat in his lap. "Chase, what's wrong?" Chase looked down at Sam. "Nothing." The sound of a car honking outside snapped them out of there reverie. They looked at each other and then down at Sam, who had finished his breakfast and was now sitting quietly in Chases lap. "It's time, Sam," Chase said softly, tears threatening to spill out of his eyes again. Sam looked up at him, his face filled with confusion. "Time for what?" he asked. "Time for you to go with your new family." Sam's face fell, and they could see the tears welling up in his eyes. "But I don't want to leave you guys," he said, his voice trembling. Chase and Rocky exchanged a sad look, their hearts breaking at the thought of Sam leaving. But they knew that it was for the best, and that Sam would be happy with his new family. We walked Sam outside, where Ryder and the family were waiting for us. The family was small, just a man and a woman. Sam looked up at us, his eyes filled with uncertainty. "It's okay, Sam," I said softly, ruffling his fur. "You're going to a good home." Sam looked up at me, and then at Chase, and then at the family. He seemed to be weighing his options, unsure of what to do. Finally, he made up his mind and walked towards them, with his tail in between his legs. Chase and I watched as the family got into their car and drove away, with Sam sitting in the back seat, looking out the window. "We'll see you later, Sam." I yelled to him. "Have fun buddy." Chase added, his eyes filled with tears. We stood there for a few minutes, watching the car disappear into the distance. Chase cried, the tears falling and landing on his paws. "Chase, Its ok. We will see him later today." Chase slightly smiled. "Okay, Lets go back inside."
