That night, I could tell Harry was troubled. Ron and Hermione were staring at him all through dinner, not daring to speak with Percy hovering. Fred and George were in high spirits, setting off half a dozen dungbombs in the common room in celebration of the end of term.
Harry retreated upstairs almost straight away. "Go talk to him," Caridy told me.
"Why would I do that?" I asked.
"Remus and Nevaeh told me what happened. He needs his sister. He needs you, Peyton," Caridy said. After a moment, she added, "40 galleons."
"50 and you have to come," I grabbed Caridy's hand and walked upstairs.
Harry was sitting on his bed, staring at an old picture album. "Hey Harry," Caridy smiled, walking in. We sat down next to him and stared at the photo. It was Lily and James' wedding.
"You knew, didn't you? Mum wrote about it in her diary, didn't she?" Harry looked at me. I nodded. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you didn't need to know. You'd get angry and become obsessed with killing him, and I really couldn't be bothered with Revenge Harry," I rolled my eyes, then stared at my hands. "But he was dad's best friend and it was easier for you to just be scared of Voldemort's Death Eater than the person responsible for ... this."
Harry bit his lip. "Back in the bar, Ron and Hermione overheard --"
"Nice try Harry, I knew you were there," I laughed. "There's more to the story than you know, and you're not ready. Besides, Sirius asked me not to tell anyone else."
"Else? Who knows?"
"Just a few people. And they're trustworthy, okay? You trust Caridy, right?" I reassured him.
Harry looked away. "I don't really trust you, Peyton. Or your judgement," he said sourly.
Fair enough.
I stood up and smiled at the boy. "I'll leave you to your mellowing in self-hatred," I said, walking out.
The next morning, everyone was gone. Only four of my Gryffindor friends had stayed, so I woke to Ginny, Kella, Charlotte and Candace chatting loudly about Hogsmeade. Kella and Candace's parents were off on some Ministry mission and Charlotte's mum was training for a game. Bonnie Wright was a well known Chaser on the Holyhead Harpies.
Snow was pilling like laundry, but the five of us still had fun enchanting snowballs for a fight. Nora, Freya and Della, three of Bridget's Slytherin friends even ran out to join us, followed by Luna, Charlotte's sister Savannah and the Vellani twins Ashley and MJ. Eventually, it erupted into war that Percy had to disrupt, much to our annoyance.
We were the only ones in our year who had stayed behind for Christmas, so all of the others girls decided to join forces and bring Christmas war down on us for some bizarre reason. So for the next five days the castle was tormented by at least five of us at war while the rest were off planning something else horrific.
But Christmas day was a temporarily truce. Charlotte and Candace broke into our dorm singing Christmas carols at three in the morning, and after sending half a dozen angry jinxes at the duo, we settled in to open presents.
All five of us received handmade sweaters from Mum, Ginny with a purple sweater, Charlotte with violet, Kella with dark forest green, Candace with grass green and me with scarlet red. Charlotte's mum sent us all crystal necklaces, Charlotte a violet one, Ginny with purple, Kella with dark forest green, Candace with grass green and me with scarlet red, which was kind of creepy.
We all got mostly foods and other various items, and spent the next hour eating and goofing around with the Zonkos products Fred and George had given me.
