You struggled to get any sleep and decided to climb up the roof and organize your thoughts in the moonlight. It was a cool and clear night. The stars and moon always helped ease your mind after an especially scary expedition outside the walls. You are apart of the survey corps and one of the best soldiers yet, today you almost died.

Your 3DM gear malfunctioned mid air and you began to fall to your death right into a titan's mouth. You could feel it's hot breath that smelled of decaying flesh and accepted that this... this was how you were going to die. Suffocating in the stomach of a Titan with other dead bodies in a sauna of coagulated blood and torn body parts just to be thrown up into a ball of goo and bones.

You brought your knees in so you could rest your forehead on them and hugged your arms around your ankles. The cool tiles and slight breeze electrified your emotions and no matter how many times you swallowed that lump in your throat to go away it pushed its way through out of your mouth. Tears streamed down your face, staining your pajama bottoms. You clenched your jaw as you tried to muffle your whimpers to not wake anyone.

You remembered the terror and despair you felt as you realized you hadn't done enough in your life. You hadn't fallen in love or paid your parents back for raising you. Then out of nowhere you were jerked away from the titan's bite and opened your eyes to see Captain Levi had saved you.

"Oi, shit head. What are you doing?" He scolded you.
"Captain- I'm sorry, sir! My gear- it stopped working!" You managed to stutter.
"How many times have I told you to check your gear before we leave the walls?! You just put yourself and everyone else in danger!" He yelled and then left you at the top of the highest tree, to join the others.

The disappointment in yourself was so heavy on your heart that you couldn't hold back your sobs. Your ears burned from embarrassment.

"I don't like it when you cry, (F/N)" you heard a familiar voice say. You jerked your head up to see Captain Levi's hand holding a cup of tea in front of your face.
"It's chamomile. Take it, it'll calm your nerves." He said, nudging you to take the cup from his hand.

You took it with one hand and wiped your eyes with your other while he sat down beside you. "Drink it, it's not just for holding." He said. You couldn't control yourself and began to word vomit in his direction as he sipped his tea.

"Captain, I'm so sorry. You're right, my arrogance-"

He put his hand up to stop you. "I'm tired of telling you this. We are in pajamas, it's past curfew. It's Levi, not Captain." He took another sip and set his sights to the sky. Embarrassed, you take a moment and then ask, "Having trouble sleeping?"

"Yeah."

"Did I wake you up?"

"(F/N), you always come up here and it's literally above my room. It's hard to sleep when you clomp around." He teased.

"Sorry." You felt your face flush.

"You know I struggle to sleep." He reassured you once he realized you were taking his teasing seriously.

From time to time, you'd escape to the roof to either stare at the night sky or contemplate your life and sometimes if Levi was having a particularly hard time falling asleep he'd join you. Most times you'd talk to him about your life before the survey corps or your intrusive thoughts and he would just sit there and listen. Other times, if you were lucky, he'd talk. That's when you learned about his awful childhood and his life in the Underground before being forced in the Survey Corps. Other rare times, you'd even make him laugh. Tonight, he tried to comfort you.

After taking your last sip of tea, you decided to finally break the silence. "I wanted to apologize. You were right. I should've checked my gear before the expedition. You drill that into our heads every time and I didn't do it. Was it my arrogance or plain laziness? I don't know. But.." your lip quivered, you felt tears returning to your eyes but tried to hold them back, "I risked my life. I could've died. And you saved me. I put you and the other soldiers at risk. I'm so sorry for that. I know you're disappointed in me but I'm disappointed in myself more.." tears streamed down your face, "I promise to be a better soldier. I promise to dedicate my heart to you and the Commander."
