" Jeremiah..." I would lie if I said that I wasn't speechless right now. I couldn't find the right words to describe my feelings so I just grabbed his face and kissed him. I pulled away from him.
" Does that answer some of your questions?" I asked him.
" No. Not yet. Maybe another kiss will make me understand." He said and immediately kissed me. " Will you be my girlfriend?"
"Of course, I will," I said before kissing him once again. This kiss turned out as a make-out section. Neither of us wanted to pull away but unfortunately, Lauren called us because it was time for the cake. However, when we entered the back yard we saw Susannah and Belly on the ground, the cake had fallen down and the crystal plate that the cake was on, had broken. Adam tried to help his wife but she shoved him off. She quickly got inside and our mother followed her.
"What happened?" I asked. " And where are the girls?".
" Belly is drunk so she was running and she bumped into Susannah who was holding the cake. They both fell to the ground. The debutante girls left. Nichole wasn't feeling very well." Steven said.
" Y/n, you should go check if Susannah is okay. Steven and Jeremiah prepare the beach for the fireworks. Conrad, clean this mess up while I pick up the broken glass. And John could you please take care of Belly?". Adam ordered everyone. Even though I hated when he did it, I followed his order because we had to make it up for Susannah. I got inside the house and went upstairs. However, I didn't enter the room because I heard Mom and her best friend arguing. I heard that Adam had cheated on Susannah a few years ago when she was going through chemo. I couldn't believe my ears. They always seemed so in love. Is this why Conrad is mad at his father? Did he know about this whole situation? Thoughts like this were going through my head when I heard something else that broke my heart even more.
" I told him to stay away so we could spend my last months exactly how we like. The kids and us." Susannah said.
What did this mean? Was she going to die soon? Is this way she was acting a little bit off this summer? I was about to break down but my first thought was to go and tell Conrad. Conrad was mentally stronger than Jeremiah so I couldn't tell Jeremiah. Just not yet. As I went outside I saw the older Fisher boy cleaning up.
" Need some help?" I said while putting a weak smile on my face. He just nodded. We didn't talk to each other. I had to build up the strength to tell him what I just heard.
" I wanna tell you something. I accidentally overh-" That was all I said before Adam interrupted me.
" What the hell were you thinking Conrad? You're the oldest and you should have looked out for the others. I thought that you were responsible and mature but I guessed I was wrong." He looked at his son disappointed.
" I'm sorry." Conrad couldn't say anything else. I could tell by the look on his face.
" I think that the others are old enough to look after themselves." I was so angry at him. Not only for the way he spoke to Conrad but also because of what he had done to Susannah.
" If they were responsible, this wouldn't have happened." He said before going inside.
Thank god we finished cleaning. A tear fell from Conrad's eyes.
"Let's go for a walk at the beach," I told him before giving him a hug.
" What were you gonna say earlier before Dad interrupted you?"
" I overheard my mother and your mother arguing about the fact that my mom had called Adam and begged him to come over for the 4th of July. He cheated on Susannah when she was going through chemo with his secretary. Your mom found out and told him to stay away." I paused for a little bit. I didn't know how to tell him that his mother was going to die." And she also said that she wanted to spend her last few months exactly how she liked. So I guessed that her cancer is back." I couldn't help myself but cry. Conrad just stopped walking and hugged me. We both cried for a while before Conrad talked.
" That explains why she has been acting like that this summer. Sleeping all day, feeling dizzy, getting tired easily." He told me. We spotted Jeremiah and Steven setting up the fireworks so we decided to join them. Both Conrad and I put on a fake smile and we walked over them. As we approached them Steven seemed upset.
" Hey, Steven! What happened to you?" Conrad asked him so I guess he also noticed my brother's sadness.
" Shayla just said that I only was a summer fling and she thought that I also don't want a relationship. But I thought that we had something serious going on. However, when she asked me about our situationship I just agreed to what she had said."
" Go talk to her dude. You're head over heels for her and she definitely feels the same. And don't worry about the fireworks. We will help Jeremiah." I said and he left to go sort things out with Shayla.
