Chapter Text
In the months that followed her arrival in the New World, New York did not see Brazil for the remainder of her stay.A fortunate boon, to be sure. Relishing in his absence, New York doesn't think she could contain such ladylike appearances in front of the little savage that ruined her dolls and marred the expectations of her first trip to the New World. Hadn't that been her fears come true? That Portugal's horrid brood would show just how unrefined they were? It was a grand relief to be rid of his presence.
New York doesn't blame Portugal. How could she? Portugal had no part in raising Brazil. That was left to humans. The humans clearly didn't do a very good job, though, she thinks.
Harmony tried to gather all of Guinevere's pieces and put her back together, but New York only wailed louder and pushed her away whenever she tried. Her other dolls were maids. None of them could ever compare to the elegance and beauty of Guinevere. But, now, Guinevere is ugly. She's ugly and broken.
Sat in Portugal's makeshift study in the New World, New York clutches her remaining dolls like they'll disappear. "Senhor," she sniffles, lip quivering, "what happened to Brazil? I haven't seen him in months."
Portugal sighed, gazing out the window. The sun is still high in the sky, raining beams of hotness upon everything. "He's been punished," he promises. "Very severely. He won't trouble you anymore."
New York's heart fluttered in satisfaction. She wondered what Brazil's punishment had been, secretly reveling in knowing he was disciplined for his uncouth behavior. Portugal had always treated her with the same indulgence and favoritism that England did. It was a delightful feeling, knowing that she held such power and influence over both empires.
"I don't wish for him to be in a lot of trouble, Senhor. It was a porcelain doll, such a material object can be replaced." A dismissive wave of her hand accompanied her words.
New York's lie slips off her tongue easily, in a nonchalant manner. Yes, 'tis a grievous sin to do so, and once she's landed safely on European shores she'll go to confession and repent for her action. Still, she's a girl and England's precious colony. It would reflect badly on him if she were to act like a greedy mongrel, like Brazil.
Shaking his head, Portugal closes his eyes and leans back in his chair in frustration. "I'll need new humans hired for the boy. It's clear his current ones haven't beaten his savagery out of him," he murmurs aloud.
New York sees a golden opportunity and takes her chance. "England has never resorted to such harsh measures for me." She frowns. "Why do the other colonies provoke their masters into such barbaric practices? Why do the other colonies not behave in a civilized manner?"
"They were raised like that." Portugal's lip curl into a sneer. "Decades of debauchery cannot easily be undone."
New York nods her head in agreement. The more empires that see her as a model for their colonies, the more England will be enticed to keep her. Deep within her, there lies an unyielding desire to prove her worth to England, to stand out among the other colonies, and secure her special place in his heart.
She recalls the countless conversations she had with England, his words echoing in her mind as she sits across from Portugal in his study. England had always called her his special colony, assuring her that she held a unique position in his affections. Those words filled her with both pride and a longing to live up to his expectations.
