I've always wanted to be a soldier. I don't know why it was just something about it that made me feel like I was missing out. When I was registering the general was really flexible.

"I  see we have another trail blazer! We have another woman soldier, you will be staying with her." General Washington said.

"Thank you sir! I promise I won't let you down."

"I know you won't L/n. Here's a small map of the area, the woman you'll be staying with is in this area and you are currently here."

I walked over to the tent I'll be staying in, got my bunkmate's permission to come in, and found a woman with wavy hair up in a French braid ponytail.

"Hi there! General Washington said that I'll be getting a roommate. My name is Charlotte Mitchell." She said with a cheery smile.

"Y/n L/n. It's nice to meet you." I said seeming really timid.

I don't like meeting new people. It takes me a while to warm up to them especially when I know I could be spending a long time with them.

"I should get you a blue coat. Unfortunately all of the coats are made to fit a man but I know someone who can help tailor them." Charlotte said

"Oh there's no reason for that. I can tailor it on my own, but thanks." I said

I got my blue coat, started unpacking, and when I was settled I got to work tailoring the coat until Charlotte said I had to put out the candle so she could sleep. I decided that I would wake up earlier and finish the next morning.

The next morning around 6:30 AM

I got up and knew it was earlier. The general told me that breakfast is at 7:00 AM and I must be ready in uniform by then. I finished with my coat and I got changed into my uniform before Charlotte woke up. I checked my pocket watch and it was 6:50 so I decided to wake Charlotte up.

"Charlotte, It's 6:50 AM. I would suggest waking up so you can get breakfast."

"How are you up so early?" Charlotte asked while stretching.

"I told myself I would finish with my coat before breakfast last night and it caused me to wake up earlier." I said

Time-skip about eight minutes

Me and Charlotte walked over to the mess hall chatting about family life and when we walked in no one even glanced at Charlotte but I can feel some glances over at me. I got some breakfast and sat at a table with Charlotte.

"Hey so please don't take this the wrong way but do you need me to tailor your coat. Because Charlotte needed me to tailor it when she joined." An unfamiliar voice said.

"It's okay I tailored it myself. Thank you for offering though Mr....."

"No need to be so formal, I'm Hercules Mulligan."

"Y/n L/n"

"Well it's nice to meet you Y/n" Hercules said while leaving.

My cheeks got a little hot and Charlotte could tell.

"Looks like you got a little crush!" Charlotte said teasingly.

"No I just got nervous when I met a new person." I somehow said without stuttering.

"I guess I'll take your word for it." Charlotte said sarcastically.

I finished my breakfast and luckily we're just practicing shooting today. I walked over to the shooting range with Charlotte, got a gun, and started practicing. Honestly though we spent more time talking than practicing shooting (but neither of us really needed the practice).

12:00 PM (lunch in the mess hall)

Me and Charlotte were discussing family (again) as we were walking in the mess hall.

"Hey if you need anything else tailored that you can tailor bring it to me." Hercules said out of nowhere.

"Oh okay thanks Hercules." I said

6:00 PM

"So you and Hercules? What's going on?" Charlotte asked

"We are currently acquaintances with something in common." I said trying to sound as calm as possible.

"I think you guys would be really good friends. I believe Hercules is going to be spying on the British soon so if you befriend him then he might take you with him." Charlotte said

"I'll think about it."

I lit a candle in our tent, grabbed my ink and quill, and started writing a letter to my parents telling them about my first day. I was oddly tired from doing a bunch of nothing all day really but I think tomorrow will be different. At dinner the general said that tomorrow is going to be really intense. General Washington also said that the British will have over 30'000  troops coming for us. Even though me and Charlotte were socializing we still got an hour of practice in but I still didn't feel ready. After I finished my letter I dropped on the floor and started to do as many push-ups as I could.

"What are you doing?" Charlotte asked

"Training for tomorrow, I gotta make sure I'm ready." I said breathing heavily.

I only got to 54 push-ups before my body fell.

11:00 PM

I could not sleep. I went out to the dull campfire with my favorite book about the Tudor reign over England. I started reading with the low light until I heard a twig snap. I glanced over, my heart racing and I saw nothing luckily. After a couple of seconds I heard a leaf crunch and a familiar voice say...

"Shit why does nature have to be so loud?"

"Hercules Mulligan?" I said

"You caught me." He said walking over to where I was sitting.

"Were you also not able to sleep?" I asked

"Mhm"

"I'm really nervous about all the troops and I have a lingering feeling that I'm not ready and that we're gonna have to surrender." I said

"Why would we surrender?" Hercules asked.

"Well I'm not just scared that I'm not ready I'm scared we're all not ready. I mean don't get me wrong we're all good soldiers but the what if questions are running through my brain." I said

"I understand that because it's your first day here you might not exactly know how we look in action. You need to trust us Y/n, I can assure you as a soldier here we will not surrender. Now, I would suggest going to sleep we have a big day ahead of us."

A/n I can work with this story, I have many more ideas so I hope it comes to be a good story. Special thanks to my track friend Charlotte for being my inspiration for Y/n's roommate.
