Ember

The ascent was agonizing.

I squeezed my eyes shut and brought a hand up in front of my eyes, shielding them from the sudden bright light.

I blinked quickly, my eyes having to adjust to the new atmosphere. It took me a moment to realize where exactly I was standing.

And when I did, I sucked in a harsh breath, my hands beginning to tremble in a familiar manor.

Water.

The waves splashed against my platform, soaking my shoes in the process.  But I had to resist the urge to move away, knowing if I did even an inch, I'd trigger the explosive.

I snapped my eyelids shut, shaking my head to rid myself from this awful nightmare. My hands reached up to clench at my temples.

"Let the Seventy-Fifth Hunger Games Begin!"

I pried my eyes open again and my legs wobbled, my line of sight only on the roaring water.

But I had a job to do.

Find Finnick. Alliance with Katniss and Peeta. Take shelter.

Finnick.

I tore my gaze away from the water and began scanning my surroundings. Where was that beautiful, blonde idiot?

On the platform next to mine stood Gloss, the sun reflecting off his blonde hair. In the next sector over, I could just make out Katniss' braid.

I took a deep breath, just like Finnick had taught me. In and Out. Then repeating the action until my heart stopped pounding so hard in my chest.

Time was running out and I still couldn't see him.

He wouldn't be on the other side of the cornucopia would he?

5.

If I make it out of here he's not hearing the end of it.

4.

Wait.

Peeking out from two rows over is a hand, subtly waving.

Then I see his head poke out and I can tell even from here he's got that goofy grin plastered on his face.

I didn't even have time to think, I just dove.

My feet and hands worked as fast as I could move them into the direction of the rocks.
