Thankfully, we weren't late, since the teacher hadn't even arrived in class yet. We took our seats, which were the only ones available. Regular mathematics was a joined grade subject, and so 9th and 10th grade would have conducted lessons together. That meant we'd have the (so-I've-been-told) total 40 plus the few 13 from 10th grade.
A few 13? Was replied with a, “the rest are in Intensive Maths. We’re that bad,” from Jay.
Jeez-
A good 15 minutes later, our teacher had arrived in class and had introduced themselves. The teacher, whom had asked us to call her Ms. May, had - thank the gods - not given us any work, and made it known that she wanted us all to get to know each other, so that our classroom environment was friendly and productive. Well, that's what she said, anyways. But from the experience of being in more than 6 schools these past years, that’s not, and will never be, the case.
Maths went by fast- we introduced each other, organized our binders, and soon enough, a couple subjects later, we'd finished our school day by one o'clock. I know it’s pretty early for most schools, but it was the first day so just this once all we had to do was go find our dorms, meet our roommates, etc.
"What's your dorm number?" I asked Adriana.
"Dorm 46. You?"
"45... Hey! We're dorm neighbours!" I beamed at the girl.
She had a sparkle in her eyes, as if they were laughing gaily at my ecstatic reaction.
"Awesome. Let's go to Floor 4 and find them, meet our roommies and check the place out, shall we?"
A few minutes later we had reached our dorms. She went into hers, I to mine.
I took a sharp breathe.
" Wow."
Whoever was my roommate certainly had taste. Their side had mesmerising accents of blue on their walls, personalised with little photos and posters of people, and at the far corner of their bed they had a small violin tucked away.
Even my side (which was, of course, exclusively bare) had been arranged neatly, ready for me. The suitcase which I'd brought had been exceptionally light when I'd lifted it, and when I checked the little closet in the corner I saw my clothes on the shelves, folded and crisp. Twinkling spots of stars ran along the ceiling near my bed in a delicate string, and a study desk and double book shelf stood nearby patiently. At the back of the room there was a little tea/coffee station as well.
It may not seem like much, but my heart swelled at the sight. The other boarding schools had looked all in all far less sophisticated than this room alone! And my roommate had to be friendly. There was no way anyone like everyone I've met in my old schools would ever do this for a complete stranger. If I was going to spend 5 years with them (if I can manage through this high school without being kicked out), I think I might be able to enjoy their company.
Soon enough, after maybe twenty minutes or so, I'd arranged and packed away all the other things I had.
" 'Sup?"
I whirled around, knocking over the stack of textbooks I had just plopped down my desk.
Crash!
Well, there goes my books, I thought drily.
"Ah-! Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. I- I'm Alyssa King, and I'm guessing you're the new roomie?" The lanky girl asked as she helped gather the fallen stack.
"Yeah. I'm Elizabeth Anderson."
"Nice to meet you, Liz!" She smiled and stuck her hand out.
I took in her details as she did so. Angular cheekbones, trimmed and refining shapes in her face overall, admirable cupid bow lips, warm cherry wood eyes, and... copper coloured hair. Why were all the red heads in this school so damn hot?
"Y-yeah... Same with you."
