I arranged the books in a proper tower yet again and pushed in the chair to the desk.
“Okay! That’s done. And, sorry about that. I really didn’t mean to scare you.” My roommate added quietly, sitting cross legged on her bed.
Her voice reminds me of silk – like Maria's jacket, something that reminds me of home. I'd be mad if I took offence because of that voice’s owner.
“That’s fine. It isn’t your fault I get startled so easily.” I remark, leaning against the wall and prop my leg up.
“Hey! Everything alright there, mate?”
My eyes shoot towards the door.
“Eric! Yeah we’re fine. What’s up?” I asked happily. I don’t know what it is about him but despite the cafeteria incident he still gives me good vibes.
He throws me a humorous smile.
“Nothing, just dropping in. My dorm’s three away, and while I was passing I saw you so I thought I could check up on ya. Oh- hey Alyssa!” He adds when he notices the girl.
“How goes it?”
“You two know each other?” I asked obliviously.
“Mate, I don’t think I'd've greeted her by her name if I didn’t.” The boy smirked.
“Ah- right. Sorry.”
“It’s fine. But I need to get going. See you later, then?”
“Yeah.”
When he left the door frame I glanced over to Alyssa and saw her staring at me, with a smirk plastered on.
“What?” I ask. “Do I have something on my face?”
She laughed and propped herself on her pillows, “No, but Eric’s never that friendly with anyone! I mean, sure, he’s popular, but he only makes small talk with most people. I don’t think he just came to check up on you.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Do I really have to keep dropping hints? He likes you, like, a lot!”
I cross my arms defensively and screw my face, “No he doesn’t! Besides, we just met. We aren’t even friends!”
“Sure he does! It’s possible. And he treats you the way he usually treats someone he's close to so I don’t think he doesn’t consider you as a friend already.”
“Yeah, no.”
“He’s a simp, anyways.”
“What? ”
“I- I mean-!”
“Don’t say that next time, will you?!” I yelled, hiding my burning face with my palms and turning away.
“Right. Sorry.” She apologizes frankly, not really meaning it because she’s clearly hiding a smile.
“Wh- whatever. How long have you been going here?” I asked her, attempting to change the subject.
“Since Grade 9. Why?”
“Just.”
We sat in an awkward silence.
I glance at my watch. It’s three o’clock, just four hours until we have dinner. What am I supposed to do until then?
An idea clicks in my head like a lightbulb.
“Hey, King?”
“Hmm?”
“Do we have a library onsite?”
