Jinxed - Chapter IV

I might’ve mentioned it earlier that I jinxed myself. I totally jinxed myself. The moment I think, there’s silence. I glanced at Jay, who’s now glaring at the cafeteria entrance, and I follow his gaze. There’s a blonde haired girl. She had lightning grey eyes and a lot of makeup. It was gaudy, really - red lipstick, purple eyeshadow, eyeliner and powder all over her face.

“Oh great, it’s Livia,” Jay stated, rolling his eyes.

“Who?”

“The stereotypical bully slash popular mean girl in school, she’s kinda weird. Bad crowd, ya know?”

Weird? That’s what this whole school is, for flip’s sake! I open my mouth but don’t have time to reply, because the girl sashays to our table and says “Hey Jay~! So, you free right now for lunch?” She cooed, twirling a platinum strand of her hair.

“Hi.” I say, “There’s other people here, you know?”

She does a double take and stares at me like I’m a watt of gum on her heels or something, and she looks as if she wants to say “Where did you come from?

“Just mind your own business, freshman. “

Next to me, Jay rolls his eyes again.

“Ignore her. She’ll try to find your weak spot.” He whispered

Weak spot?

“Alright.”

So I try, but then she targets Adrianna.

“Well, well, if it isn’t miss Adrianna. Ha! You know, I bet your damned little life is as pathetic as the fact that you’re just a lowly novice.” She cackles.

I didn’t understand what she meant and yet...I felt my eye twitch.

“Well then, I suppose you’re the pot calling the kettle black?” I snarled, as all the tables nearby turn and stare at us. I realise what I’d done.

Livia’s infuriated, but then suddenly, she smiles – murderously. Idiota! I cursed myself furiously*.* Because I finally remember that everyone here, other than me, has a power.

“Jay? What’s Livia’s power?” I ask uncertainly.

His face turns pale. He looks down and I hear him mutter something but only catch the words “weak spot”.

¡¿A QUÉ SE REFIERE CON PUNTO DÉBIL?!

“Oh, you darling child. You truly are naive.” She remarks, grinning.

... The joder-

“Oi, come on, Livs! They’re a new student, aren’t they? You don’t wanna be expelled or something, do you?” A voice from behind her pipes up.

She whips around and glares at the source. “None of your business, Blake.”

A boy joins her, grinning mischievously as another guy rushes up next to him. They both look so similar to each other; with their auburn hair falling to their faces, and their bright forest green eyes, and the identical uniforms. The only exception was that the first guy was wearing a dark blue blazer.

“Kinda is, mate. You’re dealing with our buddy and his friends. That’s not very nice, innit, Eric?” The boy who’d just gone to the other’s side stated merrily. As he said this, he looked at the girl dead in the eye.

“Quite right, Chris.”

Livia fumed at the two, but gave an arrogant toss of her head and trotted over to another table.

“You alright there? Don’t mind her. She’s a right idiot, that one,” Eric says.

“Yeah. Thanks for that, guys. Ah- these are the new girls, Elizabeth and Adrianna. Liz, Anna (can I call you that?), the twins.” Jay introduces us.

She says he can and we greet them.

“Nice to meet ya, I'm Eric and this is my little brother, Christian!”

His brother’s face turns red, “Eric! I’m literally only 3 minutes younger than you!”

Eric chuckles as his brother rolls his eyes. “Anyway. Call me Chris. I’m Eric’s twin brother. Not younger. Don’t get it wrong.” He crosses his arms and huffs.

We sit in silence for a moment as we eat (I'm unashamed to say I shovelled mine down in seconds flat – It was pizza, okay? Don’t blame me!)

“So, what’s that girl’s deal anyways? She’s kinda snob, if you ask me.” Anna spoke up.

Chris perks up and looks amused. “Livia Williams. I heard her call your friend a freshman, but she’s only a sophomore. Her deal? No idea. But we’ve known her for a while. She’s tolerable once you’re used to her. And besides, there are worse kids. You’ll see.”

Yeah right.

I grumble and shove my tray away, laying the folded tissues on it. Gazing around the lunch room, I try to see if I could spot something that peaked my interest and catch Eric’s eye. Then I knew he’d been looking at me for longer than I’d seen.

Oh gods.

It was only for a moment, maybe 3 seconds that had passed, but... so deep had it been. Eyes of never ending forests gazing into my freakishly cold ones. Sincere irises, almost loving, enveloping the view of stone-cold.

I snap my eyes away, pursing my lips as he smiles a little, cocking his head, leaning forwards. “Do you not like it when I look at you like that?” He whispers, fingering a tuft of auburn.

I don’t respond, instead rubbing the back of my neck, trying to stare anywhere but at him- why oh why did he ask me that? How the hellfire do I answer a statement like that?! ...And my heart's racing too, just my luck!

Besides me, Jay glances at Anna and Chris ( who, by the way, had no idea of what just happened. They had been having their own conversation about bees – don’t ask), then raising an eyebrow at Eric.

The latter grinned, “What, jealous?”

ERIC! YOU LITTLE-" He stopped himself as he sees the other two start. Jay flushes, crossing his arms and glaring at the table.

“... May I ask?”

“No.”

“...Okay.”

Five minutes (Three? Sixty?) later we'd all eaten our food and ended up conversing. Well, nearly all of us. Occasionally I was asked a question – you know, the usual, What do you think, Lizzy? What’s your [ random thing]? – but I mainly sat back. Did what I do best, watch.

Vibrations hammer the room.

“That’s the bell. Gotta run, guys, we’ve got Physics.” Chris said, running to the canteen doors, dragging a protesting Eric behind him as Jay grimaces with sympathy.

“I'd hate to be them today. Anyways, what class do you have next? I’ve got maths.” Jay says.

“Same here.”

“Me too.”

“Awesome! Let’s go!”
