THERE WERE FEW THINGS DAPHNE HATED MORE THAN FEELING LIKE A DISAPPOINTMENT. In any other instance, she might have had the opportunity to think of those instances. However, right now, standing in front of a furious King Pin, she had nothing.
She had kept her costume on, only exchanging her helmet for a green ski mask to maintain her dignity while also protecting her identity. Not that it really helped, Fisk already knew everything about her.
"There was five of you on lookout." The boss breathed out, angry puffs escaping him before he bellowed, "How is it possible that Spiderman was able to get in and make the override key?"
Daphne refused to answer, her gaze unmoving on the floor beneath her. King Pin surveyed the five villains in front of him before his eyes landed on Daphne.
"I know you got into a little tussle with Spiderman before he ended up in the facility," he stepped forward, clutching her chin with his hand and forcing her face up to look at him. "Should I be led to believe that you simply... gave up? How very unlike you, Mysteria."
"I was slammed into a boulder, I'm not used to being in the field like that." she argued, finally meeting his eyes. He raised an eyebrow, surprised she was talking back.
Prowler stepped forward, "I found her passed out in the snow, she would've--"
Without taking his eyes off Daphne, King Pin gestured to the door, "Everyone out, I need to have a little one-on-one with this one."
His tone didn't allow for discussion. Daphne turned to Prowler, nodding softly to comfort him. I'll be okay, she tried to convey. Underneath his mask, the Prowler frowned, unconvinced. It ached for him to walk away, knowing there was nothing he could do.
Once they were alone, King Pin walked back to his mahogany desk, taking a seat on his plush chair, resembling a king on his throne. He looked at her, hands resting on each armrest. "Your brother's condition is getting worse, you don't have the luxury of disappointing me."
Daphne's breath halted, her stomach dropping at the mention of David. Ignoring the tears in her eyes, she spoke, "I won't let you down, this mission is just as important for you as it is for me."
"See," He stood up, slowly, towering over her. "Considering the lack of loyalty you've displayed, I don't think I believe that to be the truth, Daphne."
"It is." She voiced sternly. Daphne's back straightened, her chin lifting to meet King Pin's eyes. "It's downright stupid to convince me to be loyal to you, Fisk."
King Pin's eyes flared, but before he could lash out, she held her hand up, silently declaring that she had more to say.
"I'm not here because I believe you're doing the right thing, I'm here because I know you're doing what's necessary," she clarified, her voice unwavering despite her fear at speaking to him in such a manner. "My loyalty could shift at any moment, that's just being realistic. My principles on the other hand? Stone cold. I'm here because I want power. I'm here because you're going to be the one to give it to me."
Fisk's eyebrow raised, understanding her point. He walked around his desk, once again standing in front of her. Despite the ski mask, Fisk was able to maintain steady eye contact with Daphne, studying her expression.. In the past, they'd been filled with uncertainty, fear, and most of all, hesitation.
Fisk smiled upon seeing the absence of these weaknesses, seeing only the anger he shared with Daphne in her ebony eyes. He placed a hand on her shoulder, proud. "The resemblance you share with your father is unwavering. He would be proud of you-- both of you."
Daphne beamed at Fisk's approval, having wanted it since the moment she was forced to replace her brother's role as Mysterio. As far as she'd known, Diego had been tasked with handling the mantle of the villainous master of illusions following their fathers death and even then, he had never been awarded the prestige of King Pin's pride. Without the help of anyone else, she was making her own name.
Fisk, turned, walking back to his desk and reclaiming his seat. When he spoke, Daphne treated his words as gospel. "For as long as you follow me, you will be promised the power you require to save your brother's life. Remain at my side and you will be awarded the ability to alter reality at your whim, Mysteria."
Daphne nodded curtly, "I swear to you, Fisk. We're both getting our families back."
All she had to do was put that little spider in a cage. Couldn't be that hard, right?
