Erin's POV

"So explain again how this is possible, I'm still confused." Dean says and I laugh and kiss his cheek before I explain again.

"Right, OK," I start. "We're not mates by choice as you've got it put through your brain. We are either mates or Soulmates. You can have more than one mate. Hell, you can have hundreds of mates but not all at the same time. Which is why, when I still had my bond with Kyle I couldn't feel the same feelings, pull and bond for you. So if someone has a mate, and they meet another one of their mates. The one they saw first will be the one they have feelings for and not the second one. And you can break the bond with a mate, like both Alexa and I have done, but you can't break the bond with a Soulmate. You can only have one Soulmate. That's why they're so rare because people hardly ever find their Soulmate."

"So what's the difference between a mate and a Soulmate?" Dean asks and I smile. I'm sat on his lap, facing him, in the same clearing and I'm playing with his hand.

"A mate is people who are suitable for you. Like, for example, if you were the heir to a throne you have an arranged marriage, don't you? And there are a number of suitors for you. A mate is the equivalent to one of the suitors. You love them and you marry them, or at least one of them, but they can go. So, like, you can break the bond with a mate but it's painful. That's like having a divorce when you're the heir to the throne, it's difficult. And a Soulmate is rare. So, for example - if we're going to stay with the 'heir to the throne' story - a Soulmate is the one and the only one for you but they're rare which is similar to a marriage of love when you're the heir to the throne. It's rare, there is no two ways about it." I explain.

"So a mate is like someone who is suitable for you. To like pass down your most important genes or something?" Dean asks me and I nod, "And a Soulmate is just the one."

"Yes! You got it!" I say as I throw my arms around his neck and kiss him. I make him fall on his back and eventually I pull away.

"And you think we're what? Soulmates?" Dean asks.

"Yes, well that's what the Council think too. They say that I - having such pure and direct Alpha blood - shouldn't have been able to even have feelings for anyone, not even another one of my mates. Not that I would have anyway. But that's why they think we're Soulmates." I answer, still laying on his stomach whereas he's still laying on his back on the forest floor.

"And how can that be proven? How can we be certain?" Dean asks and I smile as I kiss his jawbone.

"Well, when we mate, the mark will be a lot different than a mates mark or anyone else's mark. It will depend on who it is between but what I've read before, it seems that the mark will be more intense and beautiful and larger. And the word 'Soul' is written somewhere on the mark. And from then on the mark will be the Soulmates' weakspots." I answer.

"And we have to mate for me to be able to mark you?" Dean asks and I grin as he kisses my collarbone.

"Yes. But I don't mind." I say honestly.

Dean chuckles against my collarbone. His breath tickling my skin and the hairs on the back of my neck stick up. "Neither do I really. And how and when do I mark you during the mating period?" He asks against my skin again and I shudder.

"Well, no one knows. It comes as an instinct to the male wolf so it's different for everyone. It will come to the point where your wolf wants to take control and you have to let it." I tell him.

"It'll be hard not to let him take control." Dean breathed against my collarbone again and I find myself shivering once more. I can smell his scent of honey and snowdrops and I smile to myself.
