Don finally gets the nerve to tell Richard something he should've said a long time ago...
Dick stalked through the D Gang Manor halls, steaming. Duni's words still rung loudly in his head, the manic pug's voice something he could never quite shake from his consciousness. "Stupid mutt," he muttered, rolling up the sleeves of his button-up shirt just to occupy himself with something less destructive than the unrelenting urge to punch a hole through the already-shoddy walls of the house. "Stupid Duni, making me do shit... who does he think he is? The contract's over... Why am I..."
He resigned from his grumbling as he turned the corner to the outside courtyard, pausing as soon as he opened the door. It wasn't the sudden blast of cold hair biting at his skin that made him freeze, though. There, sitting on one of the ruined, purpur walls of whatever structure once stood in the snow before the D Gang Manor had been built, was Don. Richard stood, staring at him as the elf kicked his legs absentmindedly and tossed pebbles over the side of the fence. One went sailing past the clearing and into the trees, the sound of the rock hitting a tree amplified by the silence of the snow.
Dick sighed and closed the door softly behind him, walking to the edge of the staircase and leaning against the outside wall, feeling his previous anger fading in the cold air. His cowboy hat sat slightly crooked on his head as his shoulder bumped against the wall, but he didn't bother fixing it.
Don continued tossing rocks over the fence, the only sign that he knew someone else was with him being the slight twitch of his ear. Richard couldn't help the small smile that crossed his face as Don threw a rock and startled a woodpecker from a branch, pumping his fist in triumph and letting out a victorious grunt. Richard reveled in the warmth that bloomed from his chest and flooded his body despite the freezing climate. He pulled his poncho closer to himself and stood there watching Don for another minute, unable to look away or hide his smile. He'd completely forgotten what he was so angry about in the first place. It didn't really matter, anyways.
Eventually, Don found himself out of rocks when he chucked one at the fence and it landed with a hard thud in the courtyard snow. Dick watched as he searched around him for more but came up empty. So, with a resigned sigh, Don hopped off the crumbling wall and hiked through the snow to the edge of the fence, picking up the rock he had thrown and grumbling to himself. Richard smiled affectionately as Don cursed at the rock and brushed the snow off it; he froze when Don turned and met his eyes.
He contemplated quickly turning and running away, but Richard knew that was completely juvenile and childish behavior that would only serve to make Don feel bad. Despite his urge to hide, Dick pushed off the wall and tried not to acknowledge the fact his face was heating up and his heart was pounding in his chest. Don spared the rock in his hand a glance before shaking his head and walking halfway to meet Richard. Dick hesitated for a moment as Don stopped a few feet from him, unable to look away from Don's amber eyes that almost seemed to glow iridescently in the cold, morning sun.
"Hey."
Richard started slightly, an unfamiliar eagerness tugging at his chest. "Hey yourself."
Don tilted his head subtly, eyes studying Richard intently as he turned the rock over in his hands. Dick glanced away, clearing his throat awkwardly as Don continued to stare. He loved it when Don would look at him, but that still didn't mean he was used to being noticed.
