The Letter

I checked the mail over and over again for the last few days to look for Van Houtan's letter. Nothing ever came. I still waited. What could he have written? Was it about Augustus? I hoped so.

Isaac and I had decided that it was best if we stayed good friends. He was hurt at first, but got used to the idea. I wasn't ready to date quite yet. I may never be.

The door bell rings and I run to answer it. It was the mailman. He hands me the letter.

I thank him and rip the letter open.

Dear Hazel Lancaster,

I wanted to apologize for my harsh words towards You and Augustus Waters. My actions were a result of my loss of my only daughter, Anna. She meant everything to me. She was a fighter, that's for sure. I loved her more than anything in the world. After losing both her and her Mother, I couldn't continue. When Anna first got sick, I started to write An Imperial Affliction. I wanted others to know the pain that she was going through. The Dutch Tulip Man and Anna's Mom were the only fake parts of the story. Month's later, Anna died. I finished the book in the middle of a sentence because I couldn't handle writing about my deceased daughter any longer. I am sorry Hazel. I have realized that it is impossible to live with my pain. I am going to go with my beautiful Anna now. Goodbye.
