It's been exactly a month since I turned 17 and my selection. Tonight will be the next perfect night. It has also been 4 days since Stoli turned 17. It's time for his selection. I already know what the ancestors will say. They'll pair me and Stoli together. We both already know, but want to wait for the ancestors to tell him too.
No matter how many times my father continues to ask about my selection, I keep telling him I didn't get a mate. He doesn't believe me for a second, but my mother, Akira, is still very gullible. She believes me and doesn't know why dad would think such a thing. I just have to hold out until tonight. Then, all of it will be over and I get to be with my childhood crush.
"Are you nervous?"
"No, because we already know what the ancestors are going to say."
"And what is that?"
I pounce on Stoli and lick his nose.
"They are going to pair us together. We are perfect for each other. I can't believe our parents can't tell."
"Neither can I, but either way, I get my high-school sweetheart."
"Where did you hear that?"
"I think it was called High School Musical? Whatever that means? A film about like 6 humans who were friends in high-school-"
"I've seen it."
"Well duh I was watching you watch it with the girls."
"So where was Onyx at the time?"
"Probably with you."
"More than likely."
"Are you excited? Scared? Nervous? Happy?"
"I'm just here, ok! It's a lot and I need to process this with you after the ceremony."
"Ok then, we'll talk about this after the ceremony."
"I do love you, ya know."
"Aww how sweet."
"Asshole!"
"I love you too!"
"Im sure ya do."
