"Friends, family, guests, and ancestors, welcome to the 6th selection night of this year!"
Fenir begins.
Suddenly, the sky erupts in a boom and emits a series of blinding lights. When it finally comes to an end, the forest around us erupts in flames.
"Pups, she-wolves! Get back to the dens. Males, stand guard. We will not lose our home!" Odysseus, my father, orders his pack. "Aspen, Akira! Stand with us."
"Yes, father. Onyx, girls, get to my den. I have to stay here."
"No, we will stand with you." The twins bark.
"We need all the help we can get, Aspen." Says my mother.
"Alright. The rest of you, get to my den and protect each other."
"Got it!" They all run off.
I take the twins, half of the males, and my mom to build fire breaks.
"Everyone, listen to me! Fire braks on the east and west sides. Protect the pack grounds!" A thought races through my mind. "Did Razor get the pups?"
"They said they were gonna stay behind, but they were sorry."
"Good." I help with fire breaks and instruct a group of 6 wolves to bring water to fill the breaks. "Doing good everyone. Any available wolves need to go help Alpha Odysseus as soon as possible!"
Stoli runs over to me.
"Babe, why are you not with the girls?"
"Stoli, I'm fine and as the future Alpha-Female, I have to help with these things. I give directions, orders, and requests. It's my duty to the pack."
"Babe, you have to get somewhere safe! I don't want you getting hurt."
"Fine. You'd better get this fire under control before it gets out of paw."
"I will." He nuzzles me and makes me go home. I run into my den and see the girls and Onyx safe, but not unhurt.
"Onyx! What happened?"
"While running back, I tripped on a rock. Broke my shnozz."
"Fenir, Geri and Freki! Be more careful, Onyx. We could've lost you!"
"I'm sorry, Aspen. Why are you here anyways? Is the fire out?"
"Not exactly. You see, we were working on fire breaks and then Stoli told me to go somewhere safe. I'm here against my will."
"Oh, we thought it was over."
"Not yet. Soon, I hope."
"Where's Fenir?"
"I have no idea! Where did she go after the blinding light?"
"Beats me."
"Of course. I'll be back soon. Stay here until I come and get you all."
"Ok, we will."
I run out of my den and into the dark night. Fenir is old. She couldn't possibly get that far. She has a limp and old bones. She can't be too far.
"Fenir! Fenir where are you?"
Through the thick smoke I see a wolf walking toward me.
"Who's there?"
"Babe, are you looking for Fenir?"
"Of course I am! Why wouldn't I? She's our shaman."
"We need to talk, Aspen. All of us. Now."
Rallying everyone takes no time.
"Meeting at shaman rock immediately, please."
