𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐀𝐘 Hermann is freaking out, would be putting it lightly. The man starts a full-blown breakdown as Newton disappears into the confines of the basement, followed shortly by Mac. However, if you don't know Hermann, he might simply seem slightly panicked.

"We need to run tests on the spawning pool goo. And Newton. Maybe I could drift with him again and try to chase them out. We could call the Marshall, or-"

"Hermann," Caitlin puts a hand on his shoulder, "I don't think-"

"No. I am not losing hope, Caitlin. I cannot lose hope for Newton, there is no way on Earth-"

"We can run tests, sure. But, Hermann, I really don't think it'll do much. If you drift with him again you will be just as succeptible to the Precursors as Newt is. You drifted with him once and you were both lucky it didn't end worse."

"Then we'll do it with someone who has never drifted before."

"Again, the risk is too high. You were lucky with every aspect of this. You were compatible, but what if the person we get isn't?"

"Then we'll find another. I'm not stopping until-"

"Hermann!" he jumps, "It won't work. You are one of the smartest K-Scientists I have met. Don't let Newton cloud your decision, look at this logically."

"Charlie."

"What?" Charlie looks up from Isaac. It seems he has found the rat again, lifting it's little paw in a waving motion with his thumb.

"If anyone is drift comparable with Newton, it will be Charlie. They are the same person, they have the same brain," Caitlin furrows her brows, but ultimately nods, and that's all Hermann needs to stand up from his booth and hurry towards the basement door. Charlie continues playing with Isaac.

"-tell him, man," he hears Mac say from the top of the stairs. He is never usually one to be nosy, but he's very glad Newt has someone with him that he can talk to.

"Dude, we've known eachother more than twenty years. We've drifted together. I know you have no idea what the fuck that means, but we, like, shared a brain, dude. I know everything about him. Not once did I see that shit."

"But me and Charlie have known eachother for way more than thirty, and, like- I still have no idea what the guy's thinking. And I only came out a couple years ago. Things change quickly, I mean I used to love Dennis."

"I don't know man, doesn't seem like he'd gain feelings in the fucking ten years I had aliens in my brain and completely forgot about his existence."

And that is when Hermann takes his cue. He really didn't mean to let himself hear this much.

"Newton."

"Oh, uh- hey, man," Newt splutters. He ignores the implications of the earlier conversation, and keeps a clear voice, cuts right to the chase.

"You are going to drift with Charlie."

"No. No, no fucking way. What would he even do? Scare them off?" Newt chuckles dryly, "he'd chase the rabbit, for one, because he doesn't know shit about drifting. And I'd just be making it easier for the Kaiju to come if it didn't work."

"This is the only chance we have, Newt. Do you want to save two worlds and be a Rockstar trying, or do you want to just give up?"

"Goddamn it. I hate you so much," he stands, grabbing Hermann's outstretched hand. And Hermann doesn't doubt it for a second.
