Chapter 4 -Discussion
Enrehe woke to the sun spilling over his face with the gentleness of spring. He opened his eyes before shutting them quickly as the fierce brightness hit them. He lay there for a few minutes before giving his second attempt of sight, this time more subtle.
He leaned forward until he was in a sitting position on his bed. He looked around the room with minimal thoughts coursing through his head. He sat there for a while, letting his mind wake up from its indolence filled night.
Suddenly the remembrance of the last day and night flooded his mind. He slowly laid back on his bed in his recollection of yesterday’s memory, and suddenly wished he hadn’t remembered them.
One characteristic of normality is that no matter how hard it is or how much suffering it brings, it’s never complicated. Even though Enrehe saw the possibilities ahead, the hopefulness of less beatings and oppression, he was afraid. He was afraid because the normality, the uncomplicated occurrences of abuse and subjugation, just fell apart and now confusion rained its judgment upon his fatigued mind.
His father had once made a complete turn in his behavior, maybe it could happen again? Could his father beat him one day and then become the father he was supposed to all because Enrehe challenged his authority? Isn’t that a characteristic of the insane?
“Enrehe,” a voice whispered in the doorway. Enrehe’s mind was still too loopy to recognize it as his sister’s voice. He looked over toward the entrance of the room and found her there, her head protruding through the opening in the door. Enrehe smiled at how cute his sister could be at times, though she always seemed beautiful to him.
“Yes,” he said, trying to sound annoyed but failing.
“We need to talk,” she said. Enrehe knew at once that they would be taking a very long stroll in the woods.
He jumped up out of bed and grabbed his bag, sleepiness forgotten at the moment. He had made the bag from deer hide and used it to store whatever he thought he might need when they went walking.
“Let’s go,” he said as he approached the door. She withdrew her head from the opening, allowing him the room to exit. She led him down the stairs, halting to check for any signs of their parents only to find the den empty, so they quietly sauntered over to the front door.
As they opened the squeaky door, shuddering in fear as they did, they looked around self-consciously. They quickly headed out the door and then sprinted as hard as they could away from the house.
“I-I think we’re far enough now,” Enrehe said through gasps. He slowed to a walk and Nenia followed his example. They both walked in silence as they regained their breath and Enrehe began to turn off to the right as he headed for his oak.
“Where are you going?” asked Nenia, clearly annoyed. They always fought over which place they should go: the clearing or the tree.
“To the oak,”
