Chapter 5

                       An Oath at Sundown

Enrehe awoke and his day began. His normal routine commenced. He ate breakfast, and was out to work with the coaxing of his father, who had suddenly re-obtained his passion for brutality.

For Enrehe the rest of the day felt as if time itself was slowing in its eagerness to see the oath. It felt as if every passing second was an hour of agony. Waiting and waiting on the thing that would bind them to the most dangerous and daring thing they had ever done in their lives.

Enrehe and Nenia had decided to take the oath at sundown, as was customary. Their plan was to walk through the woods, for about an hour and a half, until they reached a river whose waters ran green.

Yes it ran green, as I told you before, for this was the river Gre. It was not, however, the green of a swamp. It was actually very clear and wholesome to drink. Many men, and woman, would stand upon its banks and drink of its therapeutic waters. Many people wondered about the history behind its color, as I suppose you are now, and have created many myths over the years.

The most popular one told of a young elf maiden. She was very beautiful and was known for her attractive green hair. It was said that as she was about one fine morning, breathing and walking in the morning air, a wicked elf ran to her. He began a conversation with her and they talked until the day was waning old. When she realized the time she kindly excused herself from the elf, but before she could get away he pulled out a long knife and was going to cut for himself the elf’s beautiful hair. The elf maiden was swift, though, and managed to escape and ran to the mountains. There she trudged for many a day, tired and lonely with barely anything to eat or drink.

When she came across to the other side she was much worn and her hair was faded and the bones of her flesh were to be seen upon her body. She traveled on, though, until she reached the river. She knelt down upon its banks and drank of the waters and as she did she laughed with joy.

“Blessed be this river. May it be a blessing to all travelers and settlers alike. May it be as satisfying for all men and creatures as it is for me now.” After saying thus she walked in to the water to bath and when her green hair touched the water the blessing was placed upon the river and it turned the color of her hair.

This story was one of Enrehes favorite stories. Enrehe thought that a blessed river would be the perfect place for an oath, if indeed the story was true. He didn’t know what the reasoning behind the story was, or the facts, but he knew that it was a wonderful tale to believe in and since their seemed nothing better, he believed it.

He and Nenia had increased chore amounts because of their disobedience. This might have discouraged them if they had not a burning desire for this oath to be completed and a burning anger at their father. They sped their chores as fast as they could and improvised on every chance they had. Soon they were done and talking quietly in Enrehes room.

“What will we need for the oath?” asked Nenia.

“We will need two cloaks and two pairs of sandals. Also a kitchen knife and a blanket and we may want to bring a few bandages.”
