"ODESSA? THEO IS ON the radio."
Odessa looks up from her paper, "thanks, Miko. I'll go see what's up."
Odessa stands up, she brushes her hands over the shirt that once belonged to her father. As she walks past Yumiko, the woman grabs her arm. Odessa looks back at her, her brows furrowing.
"He was crying, Des." Yumiko breathes out.
Odessa sucks in a breath. She nods, eyes hardening as she prepares herself for whatever Theo is going to tell her. "Okay."
Odessa walks up the steps to the attic. When she sits down in front of the radio, she doesn't immediately reach for it. She wonders, what name is Theo going to say?
Aaron? Siddiq? Gabriel? Gracie? Jax? Lydia? Mara? Rosita? Her mother? Her baby sister? Her baby brother?
She grabs the radio. "Theo? It's Odessa. Over."
"Des." Comes Theo's voice a second later. Yumiko was right, he is crying. She can hear it in the way his voice shakes as he says her name. "He's head. He's dead."
He.
Not RJ. Please not my baby brother.
"Who, Theo? Who's dead?" Odessa asks.
"Siddiq."
Odessa can feel the air stolen from her lungs. The tears don't even hesitate. As soon as she hears Siddiq's name, a sob falls from her lips.
Siddiq, the very man who taught her every thing she knows about being a doctor. He's the reason she was able to save her daughter's life and so many others over the years.
He's the man who brother died to save.
And for what?
For nothing.
He's dead now. Siddiq is dead and there is nothing Odessa can do about it.
"What happened?" Odessa chokes out.
"Dante," Theo shakily says. "The doctor we let in, he's a Whisperer. Siddiq figured it out. Dante, he was going to kill Ro and Coco, too."
Odessa shuts her eyes, pressing her hand over her mouth. "Is she okay? Is Rosita okay?"
"She's doing the best she can," Theo says, nodding despite knowing Odessa can't see him. "She's trying to stay strong for Coco."
"Is Dante still alive?" Odessa asks.
"Yes. The council needs to discuss what we're going to do with him." Theo replies.
Odessa's inwardly shouts at her brother, saying there is only one option. But she doesn't dare say it to him. So she goes with, "I'm coming back."
