The Chateau, Outer Banks

Matilda Van Der Kline was sat with the Pogues, around a bonfire — which was apparently a part of their daily routine. The blue-eyed, blonde haired Maybank boy was passing around bottles of cheap beer whilst Matilda was replaying the argument she had with her mother, a few hours prior, in her head.

Was I too harsh? She thought to herself.

Her mother wasn't a terrible person but she wasn't the greatest either. Everyone has skeletons in their closet, of course. Matilda knew that.

But all her mother had ever cared about since her father left was how the Van Der Klines were perceived by her fellow country club 'friends.' She couldn't bear being known as 'the women Bill left.' So you could imagine what left Rebekah Van Der Klines lips when she found out that her only daughter had been slumming it with the Pogues.

Matilda was dragged out of her thoughts as she heard someone calling her name.

   "Hello, earth to Tils."

Matilda broke contact with the star-filled sky to meet the eyes of a brunette, Kiara Carrera. "Sorry Kie, what was you saying?"

"John B overheard Sarah Cameron talking about some keg tomorrow night whilst he was working on the druthers, held by the Kooks. You in?" She was waiting for Matilda's approval.

"Sure." Matilda had no other plans for the following night, but this sparked up curiosity about whether or not he would be there.

By he, she means Rafe Cameron. The King of the Kooks. Matilda and Rafe were, sort of, together — secretly, of course because if the Pogues were to find out, who knows what they would do.

And Matilda couldn't afford to fall out with them, they were her only friends.

But then last summer, Matilda stupidly invited Rafe to an event, set up by her mother, at the Country Club, as her date. He accepted the invite, but never showed.

Who knew that would be the last time the Van Der Kline girl would speak to the Cameron boy.

Kie got out of her seat in the hammock and came to sit closer to Matilda on the floor.

"Hey, are you alright?" Kie spoke softly as she nudged Matilda gently.

Matilda had only ever had one close girl best friend, and that ended horribly. But her and Kie have similar backgrounds.

Both live in Figure Eight, in a Big White House, and still choose to slum it with these three boys; John B Routledge, JJ Maybank and Pope Heyward.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I was just thinking about a conversation I had with my mom earlier. Im not sure if I should go back tonight or not." Matilda practically whispered.
