The subject he'd snagged was an intriguing one indeed. Using an unknown archetype of cards, and based on the scars on her arm... If he didn't know any better, Sayer would venture a guess that this girl was that pet Goodwin was always so fond of. What good fortune he had, to have stumbled upon her now.
Sylvia Reviar. He would be certain to treat her with sympathy and care. After all, if he was right about what he sensed within her, then she may have just as much potential as his star pupil. Maybe even more. He would mold her into his perfect puppet, and Goodwin would be forced to stand atop is glass tower and watch. Vulnerable girls like her and Akiza always responded better to softer, more positive reinforcement when they were at low points like she was. Once he helped her recover, he would do his utmost to bring her around to his side.
This girl possessed a power even he did not have. A power seen in scarce few over the past several decades. The last recorded instance was a good several decades ago, in an old branch of the famed Duel Academy. It was different from the one in the City now. Sadly, the students said to have that affinity were inaccessible to him now. One, an heir to a prestigious company, had long since broken off from it and went who knows where, while the other disappeared after the end of his third year. In other words, both vanished into thin air. The only other possible subject was, at present, twelve years old and a citizen of the Tops. Even then, her testimony was from when she was three years old, so it was unreliable at best and outright imaginary nonsense at worst. This girl, however, was special. Within just a few hours, he'd already gotten so much valuable data. All it took was a simple Mind Control, and she was putty in his hands. What an easy puppet. He liked easy puppets.
Of course, the disappointing reality was that no matter how hard she may try, the girl was no psychic. She couldn't cause any real damage, and her monsters wouldn't come to life like he ideally wanted. Still, her spiritual affinity was incredibly high and she was a decently skilled duelist with a unique deck. With the readings on his monitor, it was possible whatever spiritual energy she was housing within her could overpower even his most powerful psychics. Now if only he could figure a way to harness that and use it as power...
"Her regenerative abilities are astonishing," Seria, his assistant, reported, her fingers hovering over the keyboard on the glowing green monitor in front of her. "The scars from the incisions we made on her body are vanishing by the second, and she seems entirely unconscious of the changes happening to her body while she sleeps. While her spirit slumbers within the Spirit World, her empathic powers are enhanced. It's possible she may even have clairvoyant abilities in this state— something even our most learned psychic duelists can't do."
Despite the name, psychic duelists were more of the telekinetic, metaphysical force-kind of psychics, rather than the mind-reading and fortune-telling types. Psychics, like anyone, had certain skills they were good at and bad at. Some individuals were better with causing destructive damage and powerful telekinesis. Others were better at healing wounds or teleporting to safety in case of danger. Psychics came in all different types. None of them were clairvoyant.
Clairvoyance was a power unique to those who spoke with spirits. Spirits could see things humans couldn't, and those who communicated with them could gain access to the information they had. It was simply a power that he hadn't gotten his hands on. Not until now, that is.
One could argue that the person communicating with spirits wasn't exactly the one with that power; it was the spirits themselves who possessed it. Still, the ability to enter the Spirit World and hear the voices of spirits was invaluable regardless. Sayer was happy to make good use of it.
The girl was sufficiently under his control now. By altering her memories, he created a horrific scene in her mind, then blurred all traces of her old life. Having a blank slate like hers made his job all the easier, actually. He was surprised she was already struggling with amnesia when he discovered her. While he wasn't exactly a mind reader, he could at least sense the emotions she attached to certain memories. By reassigning himself to those emotions, he could alter who she associated with such trust, love, and adoration. He merely reframed her thinking, that was all. She would certainly be happier this way as well, and he could easily get what he wanted from her like this. Everybody wins.
