"I'm dead..?" I asked, my heartbeat picking up.

"Appears that way, the real question is why? What's the last thing you remember?"

I rubbed my forehead, a few tears welling up in my eyes. "I-I was walking home and I..." the memories of tonight shot back into my head. "I got hit by a car..."

She pointed a finger gun at me. "Bingo... Strange, though, the way I read it, you should've died of cancer a very long time from now."

I stared at her in disbelief as she tapped her chin, seemingly deep in thought. "C-cancer..?"

She looked up then. "What? Cancer? No... You never heard that."

A couple tears leaked down my cheeks. "Aileen... I-I'm not ready to die... I've never even been outside the city... There's still so much I wanna do..."

She smiled then, giving me a nod. "Welp, that's just what I need to hear, I guess we'll give this a try."

I looked up at her as she tapped my forehead, everything going black once again...

Then, the sound of the alarm startled me awake. I shot up out of bed, my breathing heavy, my body covered in a cold sweat.

I grabbed my chest, trying to calm myself. "It was just a dream, Liz..."

"Are you sure about that?" I heard, startling me again.

I turned my head to the bedroom door, seeing Aileen leaning against the frame.

I backed away from her. "Jesus Christ, how'd you get into my house?"

She rolled her eyes. "Ok, let's skip the-"

I picked up the alarm and hurled it at her. But, to my surprise, it passed right through her, crashing harmlessly against the floor in the hallway.

"What? What the hell are you..?" I asked, fear spreading through me.

She smoothed out the front of her shirt. "Well, I'm your guardian angel."

I stared at her for a long second before quickly grabbing the lamp from my nightstand and throwing it at her.

She raised her hand and the lamp froze in mid air. "Really?"

I jumped up out of bed then and ran past her, heading into the kitchen, where I grabbed a knife from one of the drawers.

Aileen appeared behind me. "Listen-"

"Stay back!" I ordered, pointing the knife in her direction.

She folded her arms over her chest and let out a sigh. "And here I thought the last one was bad."

I clutched the knife shakily. "What're you talking about?"

"I told you, I'm a guardian angel, and you're far from my first client." She said, nothing but sincerity behind her eyes.

I slowly lowered the knife, standing a little taller. "How can I trust you? Angels don't exist."

She gestured to herself. "Yet, here I am."

I set the knife down, studying her. "Alright... Prove it."

She rolled her eyes before raising her hand and snapping her fingers, a glass of whiskey appearing in her hand.

"Drink?" She offered.

"It's eight in the morning." I replied.

"Suit yourself." She said, taking a long sip.

I sat down at the kitchen table then. "Ok, let's say I believe you... What does all this mean?"
